[#6680884]

just put some new sintered pads into my x0 trail brakes, had a barrrstwered of a time last time and had to release some fluid out of the lever bleed port

this time I got them in (official avid pads), but they spin about 1 second and then to a halt

all the pads look retracted enough* and am able to get the disc/wheel back in

so a big hill and brake a few times should clear the space yeh?

*obviously fluid has expanded again but got them in at least!

Try it for a ride and see. Then if not, follow these steps:

1) remove brakes from bike

2) throw them in the bin

3) fit some shimanos

4) ride happy

Maybe I'm doin it wrong but every time I go from well worn to brand new pads on my old Elixirs I have to bleed the bastards

the fluid seems to expand on them, last time I couldn't get the disc back in at all, releasing a bit of oil from the bleed port cured it instantly!

but ive got mine in this time so im reluctant to do that again, but will if need be

Used to work at DH races with Juicys, so dont see why it wouldn't work here. That would maybe take a full run of a decent track though, so might take a wee while just going up n down one patch.

yeah ill give it a shot, sure once the wheel gets spinning downhill (after ive winched myself up it), it will start to bed in and make a bit more space

+1. Never had the problem with my old Juicy's. But both pairs of Elixir are a pain when it comes to new pads.
Push pistons back, squeeze new pads in; nope too narrow.
Remove a bit of fluid. Pads fit, but now spongy, so bleed. GAH!

Convinced it was the cheap Superstar pads I was buying, but have since tried some Fibrax ones, some other ones that I got free at the 24/12 and proper Avid ones. All the same.

When I can afford to lavish some money on my bikes (probably around 2020 the way things are at the moment), I will be getting rid of Avids....

Shouldn't have had to touch the fluid at all, unless someone messed it up previously or they were overfilled at manufacture (unlikely).

You've tried adjusting the bite point adjuster to back out the pads? Likewise, old pads in and push the pistons back with a pad spreader tool or flat bladed screwdriver. Then new pads in.

Also, if it spins part and then catches, it sounds like calliper alignment is wrong, or a bent rotor. Can take some trial and error to get alignment right and stop them rubbing. Had that with new pads on new brakes (also X0 Trail) and a fair bit of fiddling but once I got it right they spun free.

Note the X0 Trail are 4 pot and may be subject to a bit more piston calibration issues where the balance may be out if one piston on a side is advanced more than another same side. See http://www.pinkbike.com/news/tech-spotlight-brake-caliper-piston-service-assessment-2014.html

Myself, aside from calliper alignment, the X0 Trails have been rock solid and best brakes I've used. World of difference between the Trail and the old Elixir based ones. And no bleeding required even when I shortened the cable.
