Hi.. I was wondering what bedding in procedures anyone might recommend for cheapo brake pads (superstar, disco...) ?

I've heard of people using blowtorches on them, pouring water on them after doing hard stops etc etc.

A series of hard stops.

You are doing 3 things, curing the pad with heat and [pressure, conforming it to the disc and depositing a microscopic layer of pad material on the disc.

Teh aim is to get the pads up to several hundred degrees so peddalling hard downhill against the brakes - you can feel the difference as they bed in.

I find 10-15 sprints with a hard stop at the end does the trick.

If you can, best to do them on the front brake and then transfer the pads to the rear if that's where you intend to use them as you can generate much more heat on the front brake.

I usually do some sprints/stops at home and once I'm out on the trail try to do some hard stops when I'm on a decent hill. However, I've never been satisfied with the result...

Is it the case that if a set of pads are "badly" bedded in by not getting properly hot in the first place, that they will never perform very well?
