If I were you I’d understand what the problem is first before you try and solve it.

Trying to mate yes. I'm off to the woods later with my lad with Shockwiz on there.

It could be now that i know i have 200+ in there the problem has gone away... but won't know till later.

It very much sounds like you need more pressure and/or tokens. If it’s a case of being ok ish but then blowing through the final bit (and there is a regressive leverage curve) I’d fill it with tokens and keep the same pressure as my next step and see what that does.

With 220 psi and playing on arguably slightly smaller jumps i was getting to here

So i dropped it to 200

Checked with Shockwiz, addmitedly not much data but says this

this is current sag.

I'll keep an eye on it but i'm hoping it was just a minor loss of air last time i connected and removed the shock pump

I'd have less sag, try 25% and see what happens

Will wait and see after the jump/skills area in a week's time how it is, but yes I think another 10-12psi out may work.

Is that sag with 200psi? If so I’d go back higher until I got to a max of 30% sag I think. Then ride it for a few rides and see how that goes with some bigger hits. I’d you’ve still got a chunk of unused travel then tube by removing a token / band at a time.

When all the air is out does the shock go all the way to the end of the visible stanchion? Some shocks do whilst others don’t.

On the damping side I’m less sure of what to do. My shock only has rebound and then pedal or full open. I’ve got 2 forks with lsc adjust and both are full open! Need to hire a shock whiz at some point to see if it’ll give me an improvement on suspension or not.

Ok.
Yes it gets full travel when empty

Pic is with 200psi at 33% sag roughly.

Steve - I’m with Joe - maybe just run a little less sag and put a few rides in and see how it goes - I think you may be in danger of overthinking it!

I'm deffo not overthinking it now as i'm £300-400 better off than i almost was 🙂 But i'll still give it thought over the coming days and weeks as we see how it peforms, but i'm thinking a lot lot less now i know it was just a minor mistake rathr than a catastrophic failure 🙂

👍 It’s a good idea to slow your rebound down anyway if you’re having a jump session - otherwise we’ll see you on fails and bails! 😀

Partly due to boredom and partly due to why not, i'm debating throwing a new shock in to give it a whirl and see.

Recommendations wanted from you fellas who know more than me.

Happy to buy used and don't want to spend more than £300.

I worry when i look at some of the shocks as they have the external componentry which makes me think if i fit them it will mean i can't get a bottle in the cage, even though it's side mount.

As a rule of thumb when upgrading shocks I tend to go with whatever the top end model is specced with. So I'd go for an RC3

Fox float x2 if it will fit. Super tunable so can be made to work well with almost any kind of leverage curve.

Can't find any within budget, only one at £420 in right size.

Fox DPX2 felt like it made a massive difference on mine, sat up much better in the travel generally and didn't blow through the travel so easily on hits.

Few DPX2 on sale at the moment (lot cheaper on Wiggle than CRC) but otuside budget.

J-Tech had CCDB inline coil and air both on sale, for £250-300

Going to need to file the linkage to make that Fox fit. Not a big job but no way around it.

There are various ways to move the bottle cage down a bit. Best one I’ve seen was an extra cage mount hole drilled further down the tube

They didn't mention anything about filing mountings when they fitted mine at BPW after I blew up the OE Monarch, my DPX2 wasn't that exact model though.

I'll try to remember to check the box which is still in my garage with the old Monarch sat in, unfortunately I can't check the bike as some ****er/s nicked it

I'm a little troubled by that i must admit 😀

Not the actual 'doing' of it, i'm ok with the technical aspect... but not sure i want to be hacking up an expensive item lol.

I guess i'll wait for MAshr then. We seem to have had a little confusion on the PP account so it's saying 'unclaimed' at the moment anyway, which may be a way of telling me to go for the RC3. We've just discussed it and i missed a letter off on the spelling.

So with this in mind and the fact we're not tied into the DPX2, would i just go for this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RockShox-Monarch-Plus-RC3-Rear-Shock-216X63MM/174231819017?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

RC3 then ? I don't fancy modding my frame i must admit.

Stand down with the file now I’ve seen the extra pics! Thought it was all Foxs that were more bell shaped at the eyelets, that looks alright. Even if it does need a tweek it’s not worth losing sleep over

When it doesn’t fit I’ll do you a favour and take it for £50 😉

Think the original hardware will work. Might be worth an upgrade if they’re just top hats though (haven’t checked mine)

Yeah I had both types of the Inline in the past. The first type shat it itself, the revised version wasn’t feeling great by the time I got rid either. Shame as it was lovely when it was working

Must admit, i'm having shock debates. The standard Monarch shock on there now i've managed to get better with a bit more pressure and slowing the rebound a bit, so on jumps i'm not bottoming it out now. (Although the jumps are lower than some i've done/will do possibly)

So i'm wondering, "do i need to bother fitting this at all" it's due to arrive today. But i'm debating whether it will go in or not.

Sold to him, went to the woods jumping today with my lad and if i'm honest, the shock is as good or better than i am, so it went straight out.

Bike is still awesome though 🙂

Lockdown means lots of spare time so today was frame bearings.

I've got a spare set here should they need swapping but they're all smooth, so just cleaned, lubed, checked and put back together.

Ha! I was recently bought that same mug as a present.

How many sus bearings i the Whyte? I changed all 11, bloody 11, on the Jeffsy last year. They weren't all shot admittedly but I was chasing down a weird clicking noise so changed them all to be sure.

Just doing the same job on my G170. Although not disastrous a few were running rough so I decided to change them. Although a different size to yours (170 uses 3802s) I really like the fact they are all the same size. Also worth noting that the 170 no longer uses the black screw on cap that yours has. Could be why mine haven’t lasted?

I always pry off the seal with a scalpel and repack the bearing with grease. Not sure how much it helps but makes me feel better!
