They're like trains, these titanium pinion hardtail builds... 🤣😁

Loads of bits being delivered today, managed to nab the one set of Burgtec penthouse mk5 pedals in silver I could find in stock, along with the tyres, plus matchmaker clamp, dropper lever, stem spacers - but annoyingly the bits I need to start on the wheels (spokes and tools) haven't even been sent yet 😢

More build progress soon. I hope...

I've really played with the idea of either a rear hub or pinion for a long time, at some point I need to close the loop and just do it.

Also very envious of a new build. I love building new bikes. It's been 2 months and your making me itchy again 🙂

Ooh, that's going to be so nice. 🙂

When I ordered my Broken Road I briefly toyed with the idea of the Pinion model but then remembered the Best Loved would probably kill me if I spent that much.
One day, maybe...

Was hoping to have started on the wheel build by now, received the rear hub yesterday - my spokes/tools order hasn't been sent yet (ordered with a well known/recommended and reliable online wheel builder) and was ordered on the 16th March - I emailed them on the morning of the 23rd March and no reply either - so I'll be phoning the shop tomorrow to see if I'll ever get my spokes... *sigh*

My Hope brake order was originally 4 weeks on the website, on ordering that was then 6 weeks, which was up yesterday. Emailed for an update, and Hope have given a build date of the 7th April. 8 weeks from initial order. *double sigh*

Literally all I'm waiting for are the brakes and spokes/nipple tools so I can build the sodding thing! I thought waiting for the frame was frustrating.

Whilst getting antsy I started browsing carbon wheelsets, someone take my cards away from me!

To make myself feel a little better, I installed the gearbox, front sprocket and cranks, and mounted the rear sprocket to the hub (finger tight so I can remove it to build the wheels).

This raised another issue with tyre clearance, but one that can be fixed easily (with the aid of more money of course...) - on that note - @qwerty I may have a 111t Gates CDX belt for sale very soon, unused apart from being mounted a couple of times...

That looks bloody lovely, I am very interested in the belt/gearbox and how it stands up to a UK winter.

Saying that, I think it is too pretty to be thrashed in the mud 🙂

Progress!!

I had an order in for spokes and a couple of tools for the wheel build, but it turned out that even getting stock of spokes was proving to be an issue, so I 'accidentally' clicked buy on a set of carbon wheels I'd been looking at for a while - not ones you see very often, but all the reviews had been glowing - light at 1690g, compliant and with a decent pick up of 72 engagement points.

With the wheels bought, the only thing I'm waiting for are the brakes which should be here for next weekend, so I cracked on with the rest of the build!

First up, the 150mm Fox 36 from my Jeffsy went on.

with a DMR Defy 50+ stem on top, along with a Oneup Carbon bar

Next, wheels. Sector 9i carbon 29er wheels, 29mm internal width, and with the innegra weave they look awesome!

Rimpact installed (pro rear, std front), the rear was a right pig to get on!
Vittoria Mazza 2.4 front and rear, rear gates sprocket and 180mm Shimano centre-lock rotors front and rear.

The tyre logos are upside down vs the rim logos, but the 'Sector' logo is offset so one side would be aligned and the other not, which just wouldn't do. So lined up with the tyre valve (and the small logo) there it is!!

Wheels on, belt tensioned

Pedals next - Burgtec Penthouse mk5.

First look at the bike in the almost completed state

The saddle height is actually a cm or 2 lower than in that picture now, at 6ft 3in 200mm dropper posts are brilliant!

Gearbox shifter installed and cabled up, and first stage of cable tidying done - the un-shrunk section is for the front brake, and the rear brake and dropper will be heatshrunk together. I don't want any rattles on this thing! Once the brakes come I can then trip the dropper cable to suit and finish the cables, and it'll be done!!! Brakes are Hope V4 in silver to match the stem/pedals etc.

I still have my Hope Pro 4 front and Pinion H2R rear hub, these will be used in a second wheelset. The XM481 rims will either be going in the classifieds or get returned to wiggle, and I'll get some 40/45mm rims for a set of 2.8/3.0 27.5 tyres for local riding/gravel etc.

Wowsers 😬 that looks awesome. Good to see you've embraced the full on silver build. I went for a copper stem on my ti frame which works nicely.

Reminded me of this:

Beautiful. The back wheel rear gear will take some getting used to, to look at.

Very interested to hear how you get on with the gear shifting once you and your brain have got used to it.

Tbh it took no time at all on the test ride of the sonder bike to get used to the shifting and I actually started to prefer it!

That is an awesome looking bike and I like the neat idea of heatshrink on the cables will try that!
If I win the lottery that be on my list!
Let us know how it rides!!

Yeah should be dead quiet, no chain slap to worry about. Which means any other small rattle will be magnified, the shifter has 2 cables so that's 5 in total to tidy up which is why I'm using the heat shrink tube.

The final parts I need to complete the build have just arrived, ordered on the 9th Feb, so 9 weeks to be made and delivered.

2 lovely boxes from Hope.

With some awesome silver tech 3 V4 brakes in them.

I'll be trying out the ebike compound which I think are semi-metallic.

Went with V4's as they're on my FS bike and they're bloody brilliant, and saves me mucking about with different pads etc, I'll have loads of spares now (3x pairs of pads per brake).

I can now finally fit the brakes, trim the brake and dropper hoses, fit the shrink tube, and then it's finished!

Spent the couple of hours after work on a few days this week fitting the brakes, trimming hoses, fitting the shrink tube, bleeding the brakes and truing the rotors.

I've ordered a replacement front rotor as my attempts to straighten it have not gone well... 😁 The disc is out of true from the inside to the outside of the brake track so it's rubbing a bit which I can't rectify.

I'll go out and get some proper shots of the now finished bike either later today or tomorrow, family stuff has gotten in the way of the inaugural ride. 🙁

Oh and the eagle eyed amongst you may notice the washer spacing out the front caliper, it turns out the Hope V4 on a fox 36 with no adapter just fouls the fork leg, enough to leave a tiny indent in the leg - which probably wasn't helping with the brake setup.

First ride done and first dirt (well, dust) on the bike.

It's a bloody missile. Set a couple of PR's down some wide fast DH sections, just realese the brakes and it flies.

Extremely agile too, the wheels definitely help with that. Easy to wheelie, manual, bunny hop.

Love it!!

Oh and it's now in full riding mode, RRP bolt on proguard, fidlock bottle with mud cap, oneup pump and edc tool. Probably going to order a 76 projects piggy to carry my tube/CO2 canisters etc.

A full silver Intend fork would finish it off a treat 😉

I keep saying I don't want another hard tail and then things like this get posted!

Those intend forks are gorgeous, out of my budget though!

If rockshox release a 200mm axs dropper I'll be getting one to share across both my bikes but other than that this bike is finished! Well, apart from the 2nd wheelset I need to build... 😁

Haha, love it when that happens. You want so much for a new bike to be super fast or agile or light or whatever, and when it happens, it's so cool. Really nice build @ta11pau1 that's a super nice looking bike

You keep dreaming about that 200mm AXS Reverb, it'll happen one day! 🙂

And the silver collar will go nicely too.

Now I've had a 200mm dropper I don't want to go back to anything less, it's so far out of the way it's ridiculous! Adds to the playfulness though, can just tip the bike on its side through corners without anything getting in the way.
