I have been using my Big Dummy to tow the paddleboard to the Thames leaving it locked up for a few hours whilst I have a paddle up or down stream out of sight of the bike. Paranoia, crazy bike prices and losing my favourite bike have been playing on my mind so needed a low value plus 1 specifically for towing duties.

I found and won this beauty for £51 on ebay. I thought it was a bargain in the current climate and picked her up from just around the corner from me.

She is of indian origin, 30 years old and fulfills quite a few niches; singlespeed (tick); swept back handlebars (tick); relaxed geometry (tick); suspension seat(tick); mechanical brakes(tick); unusually wheel size and schwalbe marathon tyres (tick). Other plus points include centre stand that locks down so it wont roll forward off the stand like the BD and an industrial rack that i can adapt with a draw bar for towing.

Happy with my new purchase, hopefully no one else will be as enthused of the benefits and try and make off with her.

She's a beaut.

Does it wheelie?

Looks far too nice to leave outside! How do those brakes work? Look terrifying.

I LOVE the name. It’s just so incongruous with the appearance.

Spot on. That is great.

Do the brakes actually work...?!

Rod brakes.

Won't find that on a cytech course.

Pretty reasonable brakes once you get them set up.

That's a stone solid win just for the bell. Rod brakes and the rest of the bike are just the cherries on top.

Rod brakes are far more advanced than disks fitted to bikes. Their anti-lock qualities are superlative, especially in the rain. You've just got to know how to set them up properly.

You can take a rod-brake bike just about anywhere, eg I took my 1935 rod-brake roadster on a day ride around Wester Ross (200km loop).

Oh, stopping? I thought you were just asking if they work... 🙂
