[Closed] New 12 speed shimano build driving me nuts

Ok, this is driving me nuts. Putting together a shimano 1x12 drivetrain. Bought an slx7100 rear cassette, slx shifter, kmc x12 chain and raceface narrow wide chainring. Didnt want to play at all and was terrible. straightened the hanger today with a tool so its perfect. Did away with the kmc chain and attempted to fit a new slx7100 chain. It doesnt fit well on the chainring, gets about 2/3rds of the way round and wont sit on the teeth, im assuming this is because the older style rf chainring isnt optimised for shimano 12 speed. so i either pony up for a shimano 12 speed rf chainring or buy some new cranks. looking at shimano 12 speed cranks they come in different chainline options. 52, 55 or 57. which set will work best on a boost frameset? desperate to get it sorted and get out riding amidst all the mayhem......

Is it the whole chain that isn't meshing properly or just at the quick link? The quick link is a different profile to the rest of the chain so can cause issues - try swapping for the 12x quicklink from your kmc chain.

55mm chainset is the one to go for, 56.5mm one is for super boost frames.

nope not the quick link, the chain will mesh at the top and around to about 4-5 oclock then it looks as if the links are too short. i.e the chain links wont sit right down into the chainring teeth...

Lots of chainrings don't work due to the inner chamfering on the chain.

52mm is supposed to suit both 142 and 148. The 55 is just if you need extra tyre or chainstay clearance.

loads of clearance on frame and tyres, £100 for slx in 55m chainline, or £150 for xt in 52mm, which will work best??

52 is the ideal. 55 is the fallback if that doesn't work.

I'm sure there are people (wolftooth and absolute black) who make Cinch rings that work with Shimano 12 speed.

One up now make cinch 12 speed Shimano rings (part of their quick swap ring solution).

Are you using a narrow wide chainring?

And is it on a single ring crank or a double/triple? I.e is it in the right place?

Is it an HG+ ring? According to wolf tooth

The Shimano XTR, XT, and SLX 12spd Hyperglide+ chain works differently than other products on the market so Wolf Tooth engineers developed a completely new tooth profile to provide optimal chain retention and durability when using this new chain technology.

The amount of people saying they can’t get 12 speed to work and then saying they are not actually using the right components! It only takes one quick bit of research to realise that the tooth profile of cassette, chain and chainrings is unique. Just buy the shimano stuff!

Ah, didn't realise it was an old repurposed chainset. You'll probably be best off with the shimano chainset then.

I thought Shimano and Sram (and presumably KMC) stuff was interchangeable? Surely, one option would be to use a SRAM chain, which should run fine on that chainring and Cassette combo, or am I missing something?

Ok, so a triple chainring with the ring in the middle. That's fine.

Is it a narrow wide ring or a normal ring I.e. taken off your triple?

SRAM chain would work, but lose the hyperglide plus functionality of the shimano kit.

A normal narrow-wide ring doesn't work with Shimano 12 speed due to the shaping of the inner chain plates.

Yes, lots of marketing.

That's where I'm going. Is it the right chainring?

There are some aftermarket rings shaped specifically to work, but I don't know of any that fit a 4 bolt pattern.

Did you buy aftermarket or cheap oe? I believe the tool is included with the XT aftermarket version.
