What thickness do people recommend? 2 or 3mm? If you've tried them and they've not worked, what worked well instead?

For years I used to use them inside my motorcycle boots when trail riding the very wet and muddy lanes where half the day you were knne deep in icy water.
In that case , as thick as you can find. I used 5mm divers socks.
Maybe a very thin polyprop liner to stop rubbing etc but other wise snug fitting.
Great things when you know wet will get anywhere
