couldnt really find a review on that bike....
was a steal for the spec that it came with.
riden it at bedgebury , coed y brenin, betswy coed and soon to be going to afan
im riding much faster than on my hardtail...im happy
wanna try and shed some of its weight....changed the brakes for some hope mini's
wanted to change the chain set as i feel the FSA gamma ones it came with are heavy....any ideas what to go for??
any help would be ace
what forks are on it.
tyres, wheels, forks would be high on my list. you can get wicked deals on hope hoops if you look at winstanleys website. go for the standard option with stans rims and get a pair for £235. these will let you run tubeless with standard tyres which saves weight too. some great deals around on forks too, look at the revelations on the on one site, rebas on merlin i think it was, plus some good stuff on ebay at the moment too.
then sort yourself a nice cockpit out once you have an idea if theres anything you want to change about it, same with seat and post, then groupset as it wears out/deals come up
jobs a good'un
tyres is the cheapest way to shed the most weight IMO choose carefully though! forks are often heavier than aftermarket items but if they are cheap ones its the feel as much as the weight you'll notice if you swap them out
Wellgo MG1 peddals, £30 probably sheds 150gramms or more, assuming your on flats.
its got pike 409 with pop lock.
ive got some kona flats on there at the moment.
its got UST wheels and tyres
wtb weirwolf
at the moment it weighs about 37lbs
Strip it and weigh the bits. Compare on the web to other bits. I'd guess the frame is a good hunk of weight.
Heavy bits though are normally wheels, cassette, seat and finishing kit.
You may get down to 32/33lbs with a serious spend...
Spend enough and you'll get it a lot lighter than that!
Tyres are cheap and will have a big effect, cassette, bars, stem, saddle, grips and seatpost can probably drop a chunk with no other reduction in performance.
Wheels and forks will cost lots and alter the way the bike rides, not necessarily for the better depending on what you want from the bike, but will potentially yield the biggest savings.
There is a threshold above which a serious amount of money yields quite modest results.
First place to start is the wheels and tyres. As others have pointed out £235 gets you a set of Hope hubs and Stans rims. You say your bike already has UST tyres, but some manufacturers do spec inner tubes, if fitted you could ditch them and save almost a pound.
The cassette is also a good place to lose weight. A SRAM PG950 is a weighty 450g in 34T guise, yet a Shimano XT saves you 150g for the same ratio (it's also a prerequisite for Hope hubs with an alloy freehub).
Next up is the seatpost and saddle. The difference between a heavy and light seatpost is about 75g, the same for a saddle.
The Pike 409 is quite heavy at just over 5lb (I have one in the garage), but it's an expensive swap to have three quarters of a lb if you go for a Revelation 426. A better bet might be to ditch the Kona flats and bolt on some Crank Bros Candys or Shimano XT clipless jobs instead.
forgot to say ive put on a race face evolve stem and bars
Those WTB tyres aren't stupid heavy but you could get lighter, depends on the ridng you do, superlight tyres are more squirelly at low pressures.
Bars, stems and seatpost obvious way to lose weight.
Wheels are a good choice as well but check weights of stuff first as you might spend a lot just to save a little.
You do have to say though spending a fortune to shed 5 lbs would it not have been better to spend that on a full build? just a thought!. Problem with lightening a bike is knowing when to stop before you have changed everything bar the frame!
Wheels and tyres are the biggest culprit, I had some sun singletracks with some snakeskin evo nic's, I shed almost 1000 grams off changing just them both
The difference between a heavy and light seatpost is about 75g
Easton EA30 (still a decent post): 290g
New Ultimate alloy: 130g
Fair bit more than 75g.
forgot to say ive put on a race face evolve stem and bars
You won't lose much weight with middle-line gear, you need to go to Deus or NextSL to really make a difference.
TBH You'd have been better off with a Pitch or equivilent, as they are already down at 31/32 lbs.
I'm quite surprised that your bike weighs 37lbs!
My Foes has an 8lb frame, and 5.5lb fork and still "only" weighs about 33.5
... still for that bargain price you can't go wrong!
My Foes has an 8lb frame, and 5.5lb fork and still "only" weighs about 33.5
Really? Must have some crazy stuff on there otherwise, or those weights don't stack up!
nothing too special - XT, hope hoops, maxxis high rollers, easton bars, thomson post and hayes strokers with 8 inch rotors!
I would be amazed if your foes is that light, my mates with full XTR, fox 36 and Hope wheelset is more than that.
RRR did say about, which kinda implies he's not actually weighed it...
Proflex are still going...?! 😯
I think the point is he may think its around 33.5lb but in actual fact it is more than likely closer to 38lbs unless he has spent a lot of cash
well its been weighed on two sets of scales - 34 on one and about 33 on other!
Seems pretty accurate based on what they weighed mates bikes at . . . Tis only the foes fxr with ti coil, not dhs mono or Fly!
My Foes has an 8lb frame, and 5.5lb fork and still "only" weighs about 33.5
Similar situation here...
Got a Giant Reign X, with Fox Float 36RC2's on it... So approx 8 and a bit lb including shock for the frame, 5 and a bit for the forks...
It's not like I've even got light cranks (Saints) or anything either... Just went to town on the wheels (DT hubs, Mavic EN521 rims, tubeless etc.), XTR bits etc... It all makes a difference.
