I got one..

Its not bed, the clamp that comes with it is crap, I changed it for an old vistalite one.
The light from it is a bit funny.. its very bright, but not a fantastically usable beam.. its quite hard to explain. Battery life is good.
For £150 its not bad value
I've got to be honest, I don't night ride very often, so Its more that likely my expectations and talent that are slightly out, rather than the lamp!

6 degree beam is way too narrow for off road. My old Lumi HID was a 13 deg and even that had its limitations.

Similar light output to the £50 DX light. I wouldn't buy anything but LEDs now - and cheapo led torches and cheapo specific bike lights are as powerful as that for much less money

A minute is 1/3 of the light output - not comparable at all

Get a cheap one - P7 torch from ebay for £30 - 900 l claimed ( probably 500 real) or a P7 bike light - the dealextreme one is £50 for again 900 claimed lumen

Should be able to get as good or better a setup using LED's for that much money. I had one, must have had a dodgy connection cos it kept cutting out randomly over bumps. Its worrying the way they pulse as they start up too, they seem quite fragile.

Since I've had a Niteflux Photon Max, converted Lumicycle to LED, Airbike SL1, Fenix torches, Hope Vision 1 and now a Hope Vision 4...all of which gave better more usable light. The Airbike is £137 from On-One, or try one of the new Luu ones?

The £50 P7 bike light looks a bargain if you accept it might not be the best build quality. Or if you want something with a better reputation, then two Hope Vision 1's or a Hope Vision 2 for only slightly more than the HID.

Go to dealextreme, do not pass go, you can get 3 of their lights for the price of one of these and even one will be brighter and have better runtime, and lighter. The build quality isn't perfect but it's generally adequate, and their warranty cover is pretty decent. Or, the torches work well too, that's what I have (there was no bike-specific light from dealextreme at the time)

The On Ones seem to be all out of stock.
I've got a new Nuke Proof Reactor Eco, £199 from my LBS - it's amazing for the money!!

If I were looking for a set of lights these days then I'd be looking at LED rather than HID.

I was considering buyine one of these but saw a review of this HID on a MTBR "lights shootout" either 2008 or 2007 - comparing it to other lights. It didnt come out great - but then it was cheap at the time in comparison to the alternatives. Nowadays I'd definitly get a DX bike light (aka Magicshine / bastid light!) : for £50 you'll be well impressed.

You can find a brightstar beamshot here:

and user reviews here:

HID can be unreliable, and the bulbs are sooo expensive to replace. Ballast (essentially an 'ignitor' to get the thing running - takes many thousands of volts) is expensive too if it goes.

LEDS being solid state are MUCH more reliable.

Mate has got a set of on-one LUU lights, and he rates them, though they are now completely out of stock.

Last year I did a measured Lux output test on my HID lamp and a DX torch none of this guessing lumins bit

IIRC the LED torch (MTE SSC P7) had almost twice the output

I have yet to try my "Bastid" but it is equal to the torch to look at for output

if these ( brightstar neven ) are the same as the ones supplied by superstar don't go near them with a sh!tty stick. mates tried them, three sets went back 2-3 times each. one guy now has two sets, one has gone back to halogen, and the other set went in the bin.
