for craggy hillsides
and Spanish campsites 🙄 it's my biggest bug bear with the Lunar Duo. I think it's light enough that I could add some poles &/or straps to make a freestanding solution, just need to get what's in my head on to paper and see if it would actually work...

+1 for Lightwave tents. Have a number of them and really can't find fault.

must say i like the look of that saunders rik - looks like the hilleberg without the price tag.

i know long term the hilleberg is the better buy but 500 quid is bitter pill to swallow on a tent !

Yep that Saunders does indeed look to good to be true. Baldy does know his stuff too, as his tent has been cycle toured half way round the world.

I'm looking to replace my Hilleberg in next year or two not because it's worn out just because I fancy a nallo 3 gt rather than a 2. But I should still be able to a make a good chuck back on mine on eBay, you can't say that about many 10 year old tents!

I registered just to reply to your post as my experience with the Karrimore X lite was so bad.
I did my JOGLE in May/June having bought one of these and in fairness the price was good, they go up well and are roomy.
Day two saw me in Fort Augustus and the heavens opened in a proper Scottish down pour, I woke up to find the rain just streaming into the tent, so bad I had to put my cycling jacket over my sleeping bag. I was doubly cheesed off as it was new and I had also waterproofed it again??
The £60 was a false economy as I had to go into a hotel the next night to dry everything off

mmmmm from a chap called scotty on cycle chat.

i dont need no tat - karimor is nothing like the old karimor and if even 1 person paid 200 nicker for that tent they were had - its a 60 quid tent tops !

Looking forward to using it in our Loire trip in June.

maybe not but i only paid £55 and thats good enough value for a 3000hh two man tent that's small enough to fit under my handlebars! this is only england to be fair and the weather here doesn't get that rough, i know this as i've been a camper since i was a small child. as a matter of fact i have never used a hotel in my entire life so i can quite easily state that most of the £200 plus tents available are nothing less than overkill and overspend for this climate. I'm not saying they're not worth the money as i'm sure they are if you're off to more extreme climates but for this country they're a waste of good money.

I know you said the budget doesn't stretch, but my Hilleberg Akto has been well worth the money. Worth saving up for.

I've used a Terra Nova Laserlarge 2 for a few years - very light, extremely spacious porch, lovely tent. Errrm, not sure this helps as I don't think they make 'em any more 😳

Hmmmmm, you've been lucky then. I'm sure you'll hear all sorts of war stories about being caught out in the hurricane of '87 and some such.

I like my kit to be a bit more than adequate and as I do camp in extreme conditions (from time to time), it makes no sense for me to have a budget tent as well as the more capable stuff. That's just additional cost for no benefit when I can use a 'better' tent for lighter duties.

I have a Wild Country Duo-lite Tourer, big enough for 2 people and two bikes (laid down) in porch, not too heavy, not too expensive, designed to fit into an Ortlieb 40L pannier.

Perfect until I can afford/justify a Hilleberg.

Aye here what your saying but id like to be able to cheeky camp near beaches and on top of hills without worrying if im going to take off when its windy ( which lets face it on shetland and orkney it will be ! )

Swaying between saunders or just waiting and hoping there is enough left over after furnishing the house for a hilleburg

Laser Large 3 if you can find one 2nd hand, light, loads of room for 2 people and massive porch area, even fitted the bike in. Been using the Go Lite Shangri la 3 recently cause its just so darn flexible, use as a shelter, just use the nest, half roll the floor and have a cooking area.

I used this on a month and a half trip. Well under rated in my opinion. I don't like claustrophobic tents and this is anything but. The side door is ace and can be pegged out over a bike to make a massive cooking porch. It also gives a great view out as one side completely opens up. There's a second door on the other side, so 2 people don't have to wake up for one person to get out in the night. Not too heavy, plenty of pannier space. They also do a 3 man which would probably be better for a long tour with 2 people.

Terry it might be a good idea to talk to me as i have a nallo 2 and a nallo2gt got a good price from oli i really think it is worth spending that little bit more . the extra space is great on longer tours and the simplicity of erection make the hilleberg really usable . only issue i have had on long tours was pitching on concrete but got some ground anchors now

Ha big al you are the al i meant at the end of my first post 🙂

Ive had this chat with you before about hilleberg and while i agree it is good and ill probbly end up with one one day ! , the idea of touring shetland and orkney is it would be cheaper than going to the alps again or gran canaria to see my mate and ride his trails.

A 500 quid tent will probably blow the budget And mrs t-r will have to make do without a fridge or a sofa or aomething

Some interesting suggestions....I had a minaret for 10+ years of hard abuse - ace tent, but not roomy by any stretch!
Again, many other ace tents here (ME XT models are good), but not cheap...
At work we use Vaude (borrowed in about 5x a year), and we have have Terra Nova/Wild Country and Vango accounts, and own about 20 tents from both these companies.
Our older Terra Nova's are superb, but newer models are not as well made, and have ended up down the 'super super light' route - groundsheets, pegs, re-enforcing are all minimal and feel (and DO NOT) last...I also question a couple of thier design choices - poor detailing and excecution at times.
On the other hand our Vango's are superb. Yes, not the lightest. Yes the orange interiors are 'interesting' (now available in cream...) but the detail of design, quality of stitching and manufacture is ace. And they make some models with acres of space.

SO:
Halo 200 or 300 - heavy, but amazing amount of room, two good medium sizeentrances and properly vertical sidewalls make them more spacious that dimensions suggest. Don't like snow, but great in wind. Cheap 🙂
Spirits - classic tunnel tent with HUGE porches. Like all tunnels, ace end on to wind, lots of room, shed snow n rain well.
Chinook (I think ours are Monsoon's, the old model) - if you want a tent for a weeks camping with space and stability, these things are ace. Cheap on sale, but bigger pack size.
Mirage - not seen any, but just ordered 4 on Friday, look like a take on TNF Tadpole / Terra Nova Voyager and so should be good, not sure about how far back the entrance zip is set for wet weather. Cheap, very cheap....

Al that. Is a hugely generous offer , how ever im not a huge fan of borrowing expensive kit.

Ill see if i can find one to have a look at and see if i reallly want it - you know if there is a will there is a way and all that ..... If i can get my house signed and sealed before 24th march im 4 x hilleberg nallos better off ! - hopefully i could syphon some of that away to a tent 🙂

Would be nice to compare to the saunders but thats not going to happen !

Hi Trail Rat

can i suggest you consider a Salewa Denali tent. My better half and i cycletoured with it this summer.

Features
£160 on ebay
It has two entrances which is brilliant, especially in wet weather.
not too heavy at around 3 kg to share 2 ways.
sheds wind and rain well - it's shaped like a limpet

I love my gear and have a Hilleberg Nallo 2. The Nallo is a superb tent but we find that for uk 3 season cycletouring the 2 entrances mean that we use the Salewa in preference.

only downside against your criteria is that it pitches inner first

Not sure if this will be big enough but has lots of good reviews, is light and at £135 is also great value - wild country zephyros (made by Tera Nova)

http://www.camping-intl.com/details/2012_Wild_Country_Zephyros_2/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=Product_Search&utm_campaign=google_base

Its very similar to their more expensive model, the Terra Nova Laser.
