Hey guys, as I've gotten back in MTBing, I've been thinking it would be a good idea to buy a 2nd bike for commuting to work etc, as I know I'm going to end up breaking something on my current All mountain bike and then be stuck for getting to work.

I'm also planning on doing some touring on some of the cycle tracks where I live which are mostly packed gravel and some road.

I've been looking at "Cross" bikes, something like this:

Would something like this be good for what I'm after?

What sort of budget ?
At the bottom end you can't go wrong with a Carrera Subaway TBH.
The Boardman commuters are good, but the tyres are a bit narrow.
At the other end, I think On-One do a flat bar Dirty Disco.

You might need to change the tyres on this, but for £389 I reckon it's a bargain:

My brother has had this bike for sale in the classifieds:

If I was in the market for one I'd buy it from him as I know it'll be set up better than a new bike! Lots of steerer to adjust height of front end and has proper mudguards on it already. I reckon its a bargain.

I bought a bog standard Giant Escape for £350 and changing the tyres to suit the season it has never let me down. Some days racks and mudguards other days it's gloriously naked. 5 days a week to the office and two days of riding at the weekends.

Haven't really thought too much on the budget, I'd rather buy right the first time then get something I'll end up replacing a year later. If I've done my currency conversion right, preferably no more than 1000 euros/ 1400 USD.

In terms of stuff I can buy in my country, Giant, Specialised and Avanti are pretty much the only stocked brands but I don't mind buying from overseas.
