Lots of bits from CRC, with a few not so cheap additions. Comes in around £1600. Really happy with it. Hopefully get to ride it tomorrow, but a ride up and down the road, it feels sorted. Tan walls won't be for everyone and the steeerer will get trimmed when I've had a couple of rides

Great bike and you have good components. As a fellow Big Al rider I suggest keeping the steerer uncut for a few months. I cut my steerer a tiny bit short and regret it, should have ridden for a few months then trimmed it.

Bit porkier than I thought it was going to be - coming in around 32lb with pedals and tubes.

God knows what the steel Ragley's with cheaper components come in at

Nice build (for a blade 😉). I like the tanwalls. Used to hate them but they've won me over. Not that I own any.

It's a burly fork so I'm guessing there's a fair bit of weight there. Are they heavy duty tyres too? Ditch the tubes!

Prefer tanwalls on a darker bike but they look good on that. Nearly finished a Bigwig build myself just waiting on some hub adaptors.

Surprised by the weight, mine is almost one kg lighter with 36,1900 wheels, NX cassette, same SLX but no tubes and 800g tyres.

Sure your scales are accurate?

Or perhaps mine aren't although I did weigh the parts individually on kitchen scales....

Reminds me of this I had in 2016
https://flic.kr/p/DDwB3s
We did not get on apart from a day at BPW where it excelled (apart from battering me) brilliant for dicking about in the woods but for long XC rides I felt like it was the wrong bike.

Iirc yours was without pedals - they weigh 420g. My tyres are 980g each, so there's 780g total. Add in tubes, I've got pretty heavy duty ones

Forks there's not much in it, but my wheels are 100g lighter

Dunno, that's just picking it up by the saddle with some digital luggage scales, not sure how accurate they are.

Had another pedal a bit further and feels quite sluggish riding down the road, so the tyres may get swapped. Not sure about tubeless yet - every ride where we have tyre issues, it's the tubeless guys. Had years on the ebike with no problems running tubes

It will be mostly shorter rides (10-15 mines) tbh usually with a good dose of techy DH, so kinda built for a purpose.

Ebike will still be my regular ride (when it's fixed)

Very nice. 👍

I was very tempted by the Big Al frame in white. Didn't have enough parts kicking about to bite the bullet. Went with a Scout complete build instead which will be tweaked if needed.

Not sure why mine is such a big pig then - could be iffy scales, can't just be down to tubes, surely? It does feel like it's over 30lbs though just picking it up

Not sure about tubeless yet – every ride where we have tyre issues, it’s the tubeless guys. Had years on the ebike with no problems running tubes

And every other bike I've had. Very rarely get punctures. Yet every few rides or so there's one of the tubeless guys burping, or splitting a tyre and borrowing a tube off me.

I did say to myself I'd give it a go with this bike, just couldn't be bothered faffing for the first time when I was building this up - might do it next week

If you don't get puncture then you probably don't need tubeless.
Personally when I was running tubes I was getting a puncture every other ride on the South Downs.

Since going tubeless 8 years ago, I got one.

Never had any issues, burping, leaks or damage either. Perhaps sheer luck?

Setting up doesn't take any/much longer than a tube nowadays.

Nice bike.
Any would think there’s a shop somewhere selling discounted Nukeproof kit 😉.

Wish I’d bought a new set of wheels now.

First ride today and what can I say.

Wow!

Never slung a leg over a bike and it felt quite so 'just right' straight away.

The reach is longer than any bike I've ever had and I like short bikes, so there was a bit of trepidation. It's slack and I built it with a slightly longer rake than the standard spec (just the forks that were available) and I built the cockpit high, so thought it may wander a tad. My HT's have always been steel, so I was expecting a harsh ride. The BB is looooowww, so I was expecting pedal strikes. Never ridden a full 29'er before, so didn't really know what to expect on that front.

Any misgivings were completely unfounded. It climbed like a dream AND on pretty much every bike I ride, I get a numb dick on a long climb - today, absolutely nothing after a mile long road climb. Maybe the saddle, maybe the position, dunno? No sore wrists/numb hands either.

Riding across the moors, it felt so compliant, at times almost like riding a short travel FS, or HT with a suspension seat post. And no pedal strikes

Didn't really push it downhill, as I was alone and going to take a bit of time finding it's limits/level of grip. But it felt really planted and did some steep steps in the woods as really as my FS

The weird bit - riding on the road, it initially felt like I was towing an anchor through treacle, but then on the trails it zips along - I've read this is a trait of the Griffus tyres though. That said, even towards the end of the ride, when I've normally got heavy legs, it wasn't a chore to pedal. In fact none of it was tiring, comparing it to my outgoing HT.

Love it

Forks need a bit of a tweak - more pressure, or a token, not sure, but that will be easily sorted. Other than that, verdict is out on the tyres, but there's literally nothing else I would change about it

Nice ride looks the business

£1600 notes seems very steep for the parts build mind and what £1600 would of got you these days for a full build ,but if your happy that's all that matters.

Came in at a bit more than some of the other builds (but I think some people discount parts that they already own)

Extravagant bits were £90 on some bling rotors, but considering the rest of the braking set up was £90, I'll take that - the Slate Evo's are ace btw. Went for a £50 Horizon headset, rather than the £2.99 Neutron, Horizon BB too (dunno cost without checking). Tyres were £130, but was set on the Hutchinson's. Other than that, everything else was heavily discounted.

There are some decent full builds out there for £1600, but you are generally getting a shit set of wheels - I went Horizon Pro's for £360, reduced from (£600??), you don't get the Sam Hill pedals, chain guide/bash guard, XT shifter, or carbon bars and would probably spend some £££ upgrading, so yeah, I'm happy with the build 👍

Yeah you've got a really lovely build for £1600. Nothing off the peg will come close to it
