Is our best bet to aim to park at Kentmere or Sadgill? We dont really have time to extend the route by starting at Staveley (but interested in suggestions that only add an hour or so).
cheers
Of the two though, Sadgill is the better bet - more space to park.
However both can be nightmares to get to and from with one singletrack road. Get stuck with an oncoming tractor on there or arsing round trying to find a parking spot and you'll waste an hour anyway.
Park at Staveley, ride up the road to Kentmere it'll be 20 mins max. As an aside, the residents and farmers hate people parking at Kentmere, it just leads to inconsiderate parking and blocked access to farms or drives. And then when you finish you still drive back to Staveley for cake anyway!
OK, that adds about 8 miles of road and about 150m extra climbing. There's plenty of bridleways either side of the tarmac, maybe I should try and make more time and put together a slightly longer off road route.
Get down Nan Bield and into Kentmere, go up past the farm and onto this track - the Sawmill Cottage Descent. A mile or so of beautiful sweeping singletrack, all slightly downhill.
Then the final road run back to Wilfs. There's a reason everyone parks at Staveley!
The BW that comes down past Millrigg Knott wood from the tops is a cracker as well IIRC. If you park in Staveley, start the ride with a plod up to Kentmere, the first climb up over to Sadgill is (again, IIRC) a double track kinda thing which is pretty steady. On the way back (after the descent from Nan Bield to Kentmere, climb back up the same double track but at the top take a right and down to pick up that descent through Millrigg Knott and then its 5 mins spin back to Staveley.
Its a ride I have lined up for the summer...
Thanks, that's what I was after.
