It's all very well and good I suppose. Back in the day, 1992 or thereabouts, we (The Cranleigh Moto Sport crew) named the vertical plummet that drops straight down from the top of Holmbury Hill in leafy Surrey - The Widowmaker. For obvious reasons.
And this works within the wholesomely cliquey confines of your group of regular riders. It's something you collectively share - a knowing bit of inside information, that story of [i]that time when...[/i] But when I'm out exploring a new area, or simply riding on my own, I want to experience the trail for what it is, not be subject to another person's (or group's) imputation of what that trail is to them. Modern life is full of signs, names and flags, and one of the motives for riding is to escape from all of this.
Do I really need or want to know that such and such is 'The Corkscrew'... or that x,y, and z are 'Mind Bender', 'Do Ya Have the Balls?' and 'Two Smokin' Barrels'? It's just a trail, surrounded by trees, adorned by rocks and festooned with jumpy bits. Can't it simply stay that way..? ๐
