MyWhoosh experts - connecting a BT cadence sensor on an ipad?

After discussion on here last week about turbo "fun", I've been loaned smart trainer (Thanks @fathomer!) and have downloaded MyWhoosh onto my ipad.

My existing cadence sensor is an old Garmin ANT+ only one. So I've ponied up for a Decathlon Bluetooth one.

Except I can't get it to connect...

If i take the battery out of the sensor and reinstall it, the sensor becomes briefly visible on the "devices" screen and I get taken to another window with a "pair" button. Then it just goes back to "devices" and the sensor can't be found again until I powercycle it again.

I've tried different batteries.

The sensor is visible as a paired accessory throughout if I go into the ipad bluetooth menu. (there's no "i" button next to it, so I can't see any further details or unpair/forget it, same for the turbo)

Google suggest this is a commonish theme, but I can't actually see a solution.

I don't believe there's any other apps on the ipad that would use the sensor. No Garmin connect, no Strava. Komoot? Doesn't use sensors to my knowledge? There's no other sports utilities on it.

Any ideas? There doesn't seem to be a neat way to run an ANT+ dongle on an ipad either...

Thanks.
