[#3796969]

Hi, new to the site but here goes.

Have been commuting to work for about 2 years, 2 to 3 times a week, 20 mile round trip per day and love cycling.

Wanted to get back into some offroad stuff and my Boardman hybrid was just not up to it so i have bought a 2011, last seasons, oragne G3.

Cost £650, current seasons going for around £850 ish. Could not get on with the 2012 colour scheme though as funny as it sounds but think the 2011 bike looks miles better. Took a picture of my weapon of choice in its wilderness. Took ages to decide between this and a cube of similar price but could not get on with the cube sizing feel and the orange felt just right and better built.Would like to know what people think of it for my first off roader. See attached pic.[img]

Get that bell off it! Otherwise, nice looking bike, I have heard they are on the stiff side.

Looks like a solid no nonsense HT...but the reflectors and bell make it look commutey. Easily fixed though 😉

It could do with being an orange five to fit in better around here, but aside from that its very nice. Just one thing though, reflectors.........not cool.

Bell handy for trails when trying to get past people.

Dont you need the reflectors to be road legal??

Other wise i will take them off.

Kayak - Newby to to mountain biking, could not stretch to an Orange Five and wanted a hardtail for the kind of stuff i wanna do. P7's are nice but were beyond my budget in these times of austerity!!

Bell and reflectors are only a legal requirement at point of sale. Once the bike is sold they are only a recommendation.
It is a legal requirement to have reflectors fitted to your pedals if you ride after lighting up time.
Nice bike for the money.

Only pulling your leg, you'll see what I mean about Fives I expect. Quite common around here 🙂

Shouldn't admit to taking photos of your 'weapon of choice in the wilderness' on a public forum- you'll get locked up and everything!

Nice, no nonsemse, the perfect bike for 95% of riding. Still, I expect you'll be "upgrading" bits before long.

lovely ride. Though those tyres are not a good introductory tyre- in fact they're the worst tyres I've ever ridden. Get some nobby nics on there, or some high rollers. ANYTHING ELSE basically.

Yeh Faz - I agree with you on that one - lots of bad reviews on those tyres. Any suggestions on a decent all rounder tyre, more for off road but will cope with some higher pressures for road riding??

Sorry Faz - did not read you post properly - you have suggested Nobby Nics or High rollers.

I will have a look at both of them for starters!!

The biggest problem with that bike is its an Orange. I don't mean that in a bad way as, for me, they are quality bikes, but mountain biking is a slippery path and you'l soon find yourself spending more time reading about bikes online than riding them, and also spending lots of money (or the credit card companies money) on "upgrades". Having bought into the Orange "Marque" you'll want to maintain that quality, and as you've seen, their dandy horses are not cheap! This place will convinve you that you need a steel single speed (there's your P7) and an "All mountain rig" (That'll be a 5). You'll also need a road bike for "training" but don't bother with the Carb-o, its really overpriced for what it is (IMEO).

Nice bike though, and a good frame to upgrade should you see fit and the branding holds its value well.

Very nice indeed. I reckon I might commute on my G4 this morning to be part of the Orange crowd (as opposed to the rawed GT singlespeed crowd, of which I am the only one where I go).

I'm quite excited.

Ive got a G3 exactly the same & love it to bits. Ive put a Charge Spoon saddle on it & some DMR vaults.

My riding is mainly trails and im not into jumping off rocks anymore so its perfect for me.

Gotta agree about the tyres though as Ive replaced them with Maxxis Advantage 2.4 on front 2.1 on the rear as there is not much clearance on the chainstays.

The Contis where OK but the maxxis ride miles better on rough surfaces.

Had my G3 since July & apart from snapping the Mech Hanger on a pitch black night ride on my own in the middle of nowhere its been 100%

Cheers Simmy

I also have a Charge Spoon that i put on my Boardman for commuting but could not get on with it!!

That said the saddle on the orange seems really comfy to me so i may keep it on. Any reason why you changed it??

Went for a blast on it yesterday.

Sluggish on the road though, should i be pumping the tyres up to a bit more than recomended???

Off road on shale track it was a nimble dream!!
