[#916936]

decided to have a garage clearout over the last couple of weeks.
found so much stuff, i decided a singlespeed project was needed to utilise some stuff lying about.
rather than selling on, which i tried, i realised a singlespeed was possible from the bits, plus a new rear wheel and a pair of forks which i didn't have.
the fork fitted is temporary until i receive my carbon on-one and the brakes will come next week - old hope mini's....
can't wait to give it a run to the pub next weekend ๐Ÿ˜€
the Hummer is ****ed due to chainsuck, but the chances of suck on this set-up now are few and far between !

very nice.
i would try and tighten up the chain line enough to use a push up tensioner (34 ring perhaps) but thats just cause it looks prettier.
carbon fork
light brakes with smaller rotors.

super light!

Can't you get one more link out of that chain (or run the tensioner pushing up)?

Stick a half link in it and use a push up tensioner liek those on one models.

You'll probably get chain slip with it pushing down

your tensioner is pushing the chain down at the moment.

if your chain is the right length, the spring can be reveresed, so the tensioner is under the chain and pushes it up, towards the chainstay.

this is cleaner
gives better clearence
and wraps more chain around the sprocket, which is a good thing

[img] [/img] like this but with no ziptie, and better looking...

I was wondering how you had got that to look quite so clean then realised you had not fitted brakes.

At least that should cure the chainsuck ๐Ÿ˜‰

OK, it looks great, BUT is that sprung tensioner? If it is, take it to bits, remove the spring and grind the bolt so when you do it up it locks the tensioner in one place, next do as other suggest and get it set under the chain... then the saddle, a jaunty angle but it looks uncomfy....

Them forks look good as it happens, but rekon they will really let you know what rigid means, and did you mean to cut the steerer too short?...

@olly - i don't see the difference olly - the tensioner is working so far, although without brakes, it's not been stressed yet...........?

The tensioner working up allows more chain in contact with the sprocket thus won't slip.

Singlespeeding is where its at for 2010, bring it on!

aha - i have the on-one tensioner - perhaps i can perform the same mod as shown above then ?
and WTF is a half-link ???????

Its a link that is phat at one end and thin at the other, thus half the size of a normal link, this will shorten the chain by 1/2 a link

Yeah I know, you told me... ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Without a half link, you won't get another link out of the chain. Mine looks just like that and I've only had minor slippage which hasn't ever caused me a problem.

One thing to watch with that tensioner: when it's really filthy, the jockey wheel can bind against the bolt holding it in and unscrew the jockey wheel. I've had it happen once with a really old one, and again at Kielder last month with a relatively new one. That's in hundreds of miles of riding though, but it's worth keeping an eye on it.

cheers mike - i'll keep the bearing well oiled / greased and an eye on it.
also, do chainring bolts have a tendency to loosen on SS ?

You could just use a half link chain- a much neater way of dealing with chain tension than a tensioner. I've used one on 2 bikes and my mate uses one too and they're perfect and make your bike look so much better.

the_lecht_rocks,

What are you intending on doing with the forks you have on there now?
I could do with a set, email in profile.

Cheers.

Who is Dipper, he doesn't appear in the current members list?

Sorry if I'm being dumb, but the search engine on here isn't the greatest ๐Ÿ™

Would be interested to hear how the hummer rides with the carbons? I've a 97 hummer and been toying with the idea of a pair of nukeproof carbons for some time, keep us posted please,
PJ.

All this talk about the tensioner... hindsight being a wonderful thing, and being as you invested in a new rear wheel, I'd have had the wheel built around a Whites Eccentric Hub and not bothered with a tensioner ๐Ÿ™‚

...tried it and felt like a 7 year old again,

Kinda sums up reasons for riding!

Enjoy.

wooooohoooooo !
it's finished and had it's first run.
so easy, a wee bit brutal on rock, perhaps need to drop the tyre pressures.........it's a flyer, but i feel like i need all the stack height at the moment......:(
the fork deffo has compliance on the roots though, and as it weighs nowt, it murders the ascent....
can't believe i left it so long before SS'ing it........
