Oh my gosh, I have finally got a date for the surgery I need for my hip. Yippee.
October 28th or potentially earlier if I get a cancellation space. BUT...if I arrive with any skin damage (sores, cuts, scratches etc) my surgery will be postponed, possibly for up to 12 weeks.
Pre-op assessment is tomorrow at 9.00. I had a lovely ride last Saturday around Cwmyrhaedr followed by a pub lunch with the family. So that's my most recent and thus last ride for twelve to sixteen weeks.
Blimey Charlie, the last time I didn't get to ride for that long I was probably in nappies. I'm 62 now!

I'm in a similar boat, had a labral tear repair and removal of a cam impingement in my hip a couple of weeks ago. Probably off the bike until Christmas but was able to walk around the local nature reverse after a week which surprised me, much less pain than expected and the physio stressed the need to keep the hip moving.
Last ride was the borrowdale bash before the surgery, quite surreal being in the middle of the lakes but knowing in a few days I'd on crutches.
Mrs A is currently using up her TOIL with a sea kayaking course in Dorset followed by a weekend in Cornwall; all prior to time off looking after MaxieDog. I'll fend for myself I suppose. #victim, #actuallyshesblumminbrilliant!
Additional information: It was me who rehomed the dog, feeds the dog, takes the dog out for rides, throws balls for the dog, buys the dog food, grooms the dog, feeds the dog, stimulates the dog with new skills, sings (yup, really) with the dog, dances with the dog and so on and on and on. He adores MrsAmbrose, but I'm just a servant in his eyes. Such s life.
Del you are a cheeky get!
As a family we may be slightly less 'athletic' but I'd not say that I'm smuggling woks tbh! Both sons have HUGE beards but myself, no. Mrs Ambrose is very un-hirsute too.

all the best for the op and recovery.
I was off my bike for 4 months from early spring. it crossed my mind yesterday that that was the longest time I’d not ridden for longer than I could remember. The odd thing was, for some of that time I didn’t even think about bikes!
All the best in recovery, i had a full hip replacement just under a year ago, the outcome was great, but the first couple of weeks recovery were hard, whatever the op is, just make sure the prep is done for going back to the house and resting up without having to worry about getting anything or getting bored.
A few enforced months of the bike over winter? One could almost view that as a blessing, of sorts. Good luck with it all.
Good luck! Breaking my ankle meant I was off my bike from 13 Oct to 24 Dec which seemed long enough. First ride was quite emotional.
Thanks for all your good wishes folks, it means a lot. At the pre-op assessment this morning they told me that I'm not having a general anaesthetic but an epidural and a sheet will be put up so I can't see what's going on. Apparently I will be very 'woozy' but not unconscious. OH MY WORD, mega stressed now! Will I be able to hear, smell what's going on? Will I get headphones?
What tunes for a full hip replacement? Obvs a bit of Hip-Hop by MC Hammer...
Weirdly, he is exactly one day older than me.

Epidural? Interesting. I guess that’s where things are these days. Back in the day it was more typical for folks to have general and those with respiratory risks to have epidural.
There’ll be great ventilation. The smells of orthopedic surgery are unique.
You’ll be fine, you’ll be dealt with by professionals* who do this sort of thing day in and day out.
You might want to take noise cancelling headphones to be sure to get the tunes you want. No need to suffer the theatre team’s disco medley or death metal week.
*assuming it’s not a certain Sussex hospital you’re headed to.
Good luck with it all, rehab can often be an opportunity to catch up on things, improve your health and pay a bit of attention to your body, a supportive family helps which it sounds like you have!
I am just into my sixth week off the bike after badly breaking myself. with quite a bit more to go. I can’t believe how quickly it goes, there is always interesting stuff to do and it will make that first ride all the more pleasant when it finally arrives 🙂
Once again, many thanks. MaxDog is very much MrsA's dog but I will mention it to her that ther's offers to re-home him You never know what might happen eh?
Fortunately I'm not in Sussex.
Best of luck Ambrose, I won't say no need to be mega stressed but...
... I had a (much smaller) op on my hand with a nerve block and a sheet so I couldn't look. Whatever was in the injection they gave me to help me relax was wonderful - not a care in the world as they cut and ground bits of me. Much like being a very good natured drunk.
You'll be reet, I'm sure the dog will notice your absence, whether you'll be forgiven is another matter!
@wally, many thanks for the PM. I'd reply privately if I could work out how to do it.
Thank you all for the reassurance re: sensation. It's the smells that I am uncertain about I think. I know it's going to be worth it though- I'll be able to walk again. OMG.
Update
I had the procedure a few hours ago. A spinal block for analgesia plus some sedation too. In went the headphones and three albums later (1Giant Leap. Leftism, Rest of New Order) I was done.
Despite the sedation and the music I could tell it's pretty brutal. I heard power tools, hammering and loads of unidentified sounds too. I was completely numb from the waist down but was being pulled and manipulated a lot.
Back on the ward now, wide awake and hoping for a bit of analgesia for the super stinging wound.
Well here I am again :-), six weeks on from surgery. I met with the Orthopaedic Specialist Nurse today and I can drive again- woop woop. I'm not allowed to cycle but can use an exercise bike but not a turbo. I'm going to buy second hand from FB marketplace or similar- but what to buy? Does anyone have any experience in this area that they'd be happy to share? I'm hoping to sell the thing on later on if I can, there's enough clutter in this place as it is and I really don't think it fits into the n+1 equation.
I was really woried about the knee pain but X-rays show minimal wear inside the knee joint but there is some behind my left patella. So on the whole, a good news day
😀
