[#2236011]

Have been given a frame and have decided to build my own bike up. Recently made redundant so money an issue so got to be done to a budget. EBAY!!!
What I need to know is can groupsets be mixed and matched somewhat. i.e different model shifters and derailleurs or is it best keeping everything the same?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Almost everything can be mix and match.

Some all-knowing sage will doubtless be around any minute but be careful mixing SRAM & Shimano, some is compatible, some isn't.

Also - the forums on here are often way cheaper than ebay, and I often find the sellers are a bit more genuine about condition etc too.

As above, stick to EITHER Sram or Shimano MTB groupsets and everything else goes as long as you buy the same speed cassette as shifter (not that i ever made that mistake some years back or anything...)

The only major thing you'll need to look out for is shifters and rear mechs. Sram shifters don't work with shimano rear mechs and vice versa. Also some shimano rear mechs have the spring action the other way around (rapid rise).
Oh, and be careful you don't go matching 9 speed chains with an 8 speed cassette etc.

Other than that, pretty much everything you'll find is compatible.

To my knowledge, all SRAM and Shimano cassettes work with Shimano and SRAM, Shimano rear shifters and rear Shimano derailleurs OK, or SRAM rear shifters and SRAM rear derailleurs OK. Front shifters and mechs are interchangable (i think). Also most product ranges can be mixed and matched i.e. XT, SLX etc. Just watch out for some of the Shimano stuff that can be different like Saint and Hone rear mechs that had a different mount, rapid rise tech etc.
Oh and the road stuff can be mixed in with MTB stuff as well just to confuse matters.
Your best bet is to ask specific questions once you have seen the products you intend to buy. Also ask sellers as they might know and are often very helpful.

Hey, I have boxes of rubbush eh spares that I don't really need but that I can't be bothered selling.

My mates, take some stuff but the rest just sits there doing nothing.

If you let me know what you could do with I'll have a rummage and chuck them in the post if I have anything.

Many thanks for the replies.

I knew not to mix different speed chains/cassettes etc, but didn't realise Shimano and SRAM don't mix. Cheers for that.

Kaesae, thanks for the offer. I haven't got the frame as of yet so don't know exactly what my shopping list will be, but I may well be in touch some time soon! Cheers again. ๐Ÿ˜€
