What's up with that?

The thing has bog standard V-brakes, and I have to stick a new set on (front and back) this weekend only about a month after sticking on my last set.

Am I doing something wrong to be going through them at this rate? The problem seems to have accelerated, as I don't remember having had to change the pads at all in the first year of riding the bike.

I started riding to work 2 years ago and got a bit of a shock at how quickly things started to wear out.

I think commuting is particulary hard on bike components.

Worn rims combined with the time of year is my best guess. Worn rims can get a really 'gritty' finish IME.

If you have a spare set of wheels or can borrow some for a week, see what difference that makes.

Other than brake less ๐Ÿ˜‰

What's your commute like..? Are they rubbish pads, or dirty rims?

how many miles do you do?

i do 20/week on my bmx, both directions involve a lot of hard braking (as dropping\gaining a lot of height) but I go through less than 1 set of pads every 2 years

I guess my rims will be dirty, as I may not be the best at washing things off when needed. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Having said that, I do around 40 miles per week, with a couple of fast, declined bits.

As for the quality of the pads, I don't try to skimp, but I will take whatever my LBS gives me - both from the rack, and from their workshop.

Make sure your rim is not wearing too thin - unlikely to increase pad wear but likely if you've used a lot of pads, and you don't want the tyre blowing off!

brake less?

also worth getting good pads, over the last 5 years i have tried many makes and the best have been SwissStop Greens.. last the longest, no black gunk, kind to rims and they work well in the wet.
