Anyone put full guards on an X? I can work around the dics mounts but am wondering about the front mount on the rear guard. When I bought the bike Cotic's answer, a bit feeble was to put a long bolt through from inside the BB (hole there). My solution was to be use a Rivnut in the hole. I now find that to use the full potential of the guards and 40mm tyres, the front of the guard will foul the front mech. Anyone got a solution?
I'm also looking for a solution to this, but I'm running 35mm tyres.
Will be interested to see what you find
I use the front shock pivot from a santa cruz blur, bolt from the inside of the bottom bracket to hold the pivot shaft in place and then a bolt thru the mudguard. I'm running full SKS guards. I'll try and sort out photo's later
Ta. Thats sounds like the answer Cotic gave me. The guard fouling the front mech is going to be a problem if I use the maximum amount of chain stay and I want to retain a nice curve of the guard when bolting it direct to the wishbone bit.
I think my idea of using a rivnut inside the BB would be nicer as I could remove the guards for off road use without having a bolt there but yet to get round to it. dunno if the Rivnut will foul the BB when thats put in.
Just be relieved you have an X and not a Roadrat, as there is no wishbone on them, despite being more likely to be needing full mudguards. Nett result is that I've had to space out the long bolt, with a large nut between the back of the seat tube and the bottom of the guard.
Kinda satisfying to be able to 'bodge' my way out of this, but its still an poor design for something designed/aimed at commuter/road.
The wishbone on the X is on the seat stays and is most useable except for the fact that it is at a different distance (greater) to the wheels than the BB. Bolting the guard there directly won't give a nice curve, especially as the BB mount will need to be pushed towards the hub to allow for the mech to move. A Shimano BB doesn't give room inside to use a Rivnut I have just found. Can't see how a bolt will fit from the inside either.
Anyone know of a BB that isn't so bulky that has a square taper. I suppose I could use an old cup[ and cone one.
i've got hope external bottom bracket fitted to mine, as said the front pivot from a santa cruz blur shock works a treat
Externals and square tapers don't seem to match or do they?
