Hi,
I'm running DMR flat pedals and I'm looking for some new MTB shoes as my Shimano's are starting to fall apart.
Most of them I've come across are designed for SPDs, do you all just use SPD shoes and leave the SPD cover in place?
If not any shoes that you'd recommend?
No, get some flat specific shoes with good rubber.
Most people use 5.10's of some description but there are other options.
Some deals on Spesh 2FOs at the moment.
I use Adidas Trail Cross SLs which use the 5.10 stealth rubber and have been impressed so far.
People also seem to like the Shimano offerings.
Plenty of choice really.
Those weird "OWN" shoes from FGF?
This time of year I'd say Five Ten Freerider Element- good allround shoe with a dab of weather protection. Still not as good as a spd winter boot though, and not massively protective so dont bash your toes.
Cheers, my Shimano (AM41s) I think are flat specific the shoe has been good but after a couple of years chunks have started coming off the lace cover and toe.
Would the five ten's stand up to muddy winter use?
Adidas Trail Cross SL

Yeah, pretty well IME. Five Ten build quality is erratic but my experience with the elements and the standard freerider has been good. My Basics and Impacts pretty much dissolved ๐
I'm hoping the Freerider ELC I just bought will be good and winter proofish. On the plus side I think the lace flap is a good idea and on the downside clown colour schemes ๐
I prefer Shimano shoes over 5.10 in the winter because they more practical, the lace cover and general build of the show means they take longer to get soaked and dry out quicker for the next ride. The grip level with Shimano is more than sufficient and not an issue for me. The newer AM7 is much lighter than the AM41 and so dries even quicker but is just as comfy.
I have some AM7 and like everything about them except the sole. They have survived multiple trips through the washing machine since I bought them in December last year. I half wish they'd worn out, I won't buy another pair
I just bought some 5.10 Impact vxi - loving the grip and they do dry faster than my older 5.10 Karvers, and are significantly lighter!!
Also have a 2yr old pair of Shimano AM41, which I think I'll still use when it's really nasty out - the soles now have chunks missing from using with a multitude of spikey pedals, but they still grip ok and offer a little more weather proofing.
G/F has 5.10 Freerider and Shimano AM7 - but she tends to favour the AM7s, especially in this weather.
I wanted to try the Spesh 2FO, but none in my size in the shop, and I was also curious about the new ION Vane_Amp flatties, but not in stock anywhere yet.
Vaude also make some weather resistant flat shoes for MTB.
Seems to be plenty of choice at the moment.
