What is a reasonable challenge to knock off in a 12hr stint?

How about lap of each of the trail centres and then the Borrowdale Bash?

Something better / else?

Cheers

Skiddaw Helvelyn, and High street would be my choice… riding Whinnlater is worse than going into a brothel for a kiss 😀

Will someone put a fabulous killer loop together for the poor soul? If it's a good one, I'd probably give it a go.

12 laps of Whinlatter N&S is obviously the gold standard, though.

Most MTB events suffer from boring routes (google searches)

Will miss Whinlatter off though.....given feedback so far.....

Whinlatter is ok. Some good bits on the North loop and the final descent back to the centre is good. South is one mahoosive climb (comparatively) followed by an equally mahoosive descent. Enjoyable. Certainly prefer Whinlatter to Grisedale.

If you want a good route, and don't mind a bit of bike hiking, the four passes is excellent. It's about 6-8 hours all told (depends how fast you are going up with a bike on your back and how well you descend very steep, rubbley, bouldery slopes, though some on here claim 4 hours!!). Linky below also to STW forum on it. Do that and Whinlatter (they're close to each other) and I guarantee you'll know that you've been on a ride. I'd go so far as to say that the four passes was the best ride I've ever done (though in fairness I've done very little Lakes stuff, so I'm happy to be contradicted!)

Start Keswick, up Skiddaw, 'off piste' down to Skiddaw House, Threlkeld, St Johns in the Vale - Coach Rd to Pooley Bridge (as shown on Lakeland 200 map), then either:

Up along High st ridge, and down past Hayeswater to Glenridding, or

Follow Lakeland 200 route to summit High St, then return north along ridge towards Pooley Ridge, doubling back along to Howtown and lakeside BW to Glenridding

Up Keppel Cove to Helvellyn and descend Sticks Pass to Keswick.

Years ago I rode from Shap to Ravenglass, using Longsleddle, Garburn, Walna Scar, then over into Eskdale and along the River Esk to Ravenglass.

Rail stations at start and finish if needed.

"Shakes head" at the head shakers.

12 hours sounds like a good time for a coniston + grizedale loop to me

If you look at the Lakeland 200 map, it's possible to link Keswick to Ambleside mostly off road (certainly main roads), so you could do either half.
The whole has been done in 16ish hrs

4 passes and a loop of Rossett Gill & Stake Pass for good measure.

I did a loop from Grizedale - Parkamoor - Torver - Seathwaite - Walna Scar - Grizedale in about six hours. I reckon if you extended it from Coniston to include Tilberthwaite- Elterwater - Loughrigg - High Arnside - Hawkshead - Wray - Claife and back to Grizedale that would be 12 and a nice tough day.
