Has anyone made a claim with M&S and then had them refuse to renew or hike your premium by a very large amount?

Common for renewals to go up I believe- often get better prices re-applying as a new customer IIRC

We have had two claims with them, one for a dinged frame and one for a smashed door pane where the full door had to replaced, no hike in our premium. With the amount of kit we have would have probably paid any increase.

Most insurers are looking to push up premiums, poor investment returns and higher claims mean that most of them are in the same boat. As suggested try approaching them as a new customer, via their web site and see if you get a different price. Pick up the phone, and ask them to match it.

Check that you have the right cover for all your needs, bikes etc. Most people are actually under insured, not an ideal position to be in.

We had our tent nicked at Mayhem last year (08), they settled really quickly but our renewal was significantly higher. Took our business to John Lewis (AXA) who offer more or less the same cover re expensive bikes, kit etc

Thanks everyone, looks like no real consistency. I have just had a really big claim on 4 bikes so am a little nervous despite going overboard on security.

M&S have now also moved to being underwritten by AXA

I made two claims for accidental damage in a year, the cat peed on my memory foam matress, ruining it, and then my bike came off my roof rack meaning a claim for that. At renewal time they hied my excess for accidental damage to £1000 for an indeterminate period. After another claim free year they insisted that the excess remained, i complained and complained until i was told "we are an insurance company and we can do what we want", that was enough to get me an apology, my excess returned to £50 and my policy reduced to the priginal price from two years ago. So they may try but keep at them and they may eventually concede and give you what you want (and pay for at the end of the day)
