[#7714775]

I'm making the move from Nottingham to Sheffield next week. There is obviously load of good riding around the city but are there are any regular group rides going on or mtb clubs to get involved with? Any advice appreciated.
Ta, Adam

Sorry, I thought you said 'North'. Sheffield is not 'North'. Leeds is almost North but that's about it. York & above is proper North.

There's a 'Sheffield mountain bikers' group on meet up that seem pretty active and have rides on most weeks. Not been on any myself yet (happy to ride on own / currently too unfit to keep up) but there seems to be a fairly diverse bunch looking at the member profiles

And yes, Sheffield is the north - intact it's the official start of it!

The other way to tell is if you see people using the near side lane on the motorway. That's illegal in the sarf I think.

I'm a born and bred southerner who regards my time living in Loughborough as my 'Northern Chapter' and that is sadly true.

The reason for the squiggle is that it's easier to be northern (as denoted by a funny accent) if you live west, so Birmingham is more northern than Peterborough, for example. For the record, the correct dividing line is from the Wash to just above Gloucester. Anything above the Manchester-Leeds motorway zone is 'Proper North' and at some point between there and the borders you are into 'Here be Dragons' territory.

Norfolk, East Anglia etc are largely their own little bit, like Wales.

Just where the north is is relative ...

Because we're all related! ๐Ÿ˜€

Ok, didn't mean to start a northern bragging war. I'll rephrase... "I'm moving further north relative to my current location".

Anyway - here's Wikipedia's take on it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_England

Here's a test, do you say:

"Well, I didn't know that"

or

"Well, I'll got t'foot of oor stairs"

Even London is at 51 degrees North, putting it 'above' much of Canada,

GB's North / South Dividing line runs from The Severn, to (nearly) The Humber.

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

see?

The exact location of the line has been decided in the most democratic way possible - by asking people if they felt 'Northern' or 'Southern'

Anyway, Adam - which area of Sheffield will you be living in?

I've been to Sheffield twice. On both occasions the natives tried to steal my car.

It's definitely North.

Yeah but we're talking about the UK not Canada.

My wife comes from Nuneaton and when she moved oop north ( Barnsley) 8 years ago she couldn't understand a word some people said. Sheffield is definitely south...they have tv, broadband and coffee shops.

You have to go way up north to get proper black pudding. Isle of Lewis.

To them we're all southerners *shudder*

I know it's not really the done thing, but to answer the OP's question - I don't know of any specific groups but as in sure you know Sheffield has a reputation for being very 'outdoorsy' with a big social side relating to that. Don't think you'll struggle to find new buddies to ride/climb/run with.

North = where oatcakes cease to be pancakes filled with cheese.
(moving in a northernly direction obvs. Not south of the midlands)

T'other half was born in Wick, she's fond of reminding me that almost everyone is from down south as far as she's concerned.

+1

When the road signs stop saying "The north" and actually start listing place names then it's the North.

Doncaster bypass IIRC?

As for the OP, enjoy Sheffield, by far my favorite city to live in.

Do Sheffieldonians have a slab of mature cheddar on their fruitcake? That's the real test....and it's a surprisingly good combination....
