My cassette moves very slightly from side to side (toward and away from the wheel)... its a new cassette, is the hub on its way out?

Sounds like your cassette isn't tightened up properly.

That should just be your hub / freehub bearings

I think almost everyones cassette does it, just that most dont notice it. I'm pretty sure that all of my seven sets of wheels do it, tis very tiny movement though.
