Having taken the plunge I just need to fix it to the bike now...

Obviously Garmin have their own cable tied solution, but does anyone have better suggestions?

I spotted these which I like the look of for relative ease moving to different bikes?

That looks like it would stay in place for all of 10 seconds before you rode over a twig and the weight of the unit pulled it down to look at the floor.

I've got the zip tie mount. It's pretty bad at holding mine (Oregon) in place, so I've got a lanyard as well. I'm impressed at the Oregon's ability to withstand a 30mph bounce down a road. I'm really not impressed at garmin selling a really cheap peice of plastic for quite a lot of money that's a long way short of being secure enough to hold a very expensive bit of kit.

Whatever you get, tie it to the bike as well!

I've got a loop of cord, hitched round the eyelet on the unit with a mini caribiner on the other end. Round the stem, clip back onto the cord.

More secure bodgery with the mount is on its way, it still comes out on rough descents and bounces around on the headtube till I stop.

some tape on the middle of the dakota mount helps it maintain a better hold of the unit although not ideal. also tie the cord loop around your bars +1

i got a ram mount for mine which is massive but solid - no problems with it falling off whatsoever and quick and east to put on/take off. bit pricey but the garmin cost me £180 so worth it...

and one of these

Awesome. That RAM mount looks like a good option.

I did think the Amazon model looked insecure...

I'm using the cable tie mount with my eTrex and its generally fine. It doesn't move at all even on rough trails but that might be something to do with the fact that my stem is squared instead of rounded.

The main negative is the fact that its a cable tie mount, so if I ever want to fettle with the headset preload I have to cut the ties off to remove the mount and then remount with new ones. Admittedly I never need to do that and only strip everything down twice a year when doing a general service but its still a bit of a pain. Oh, that and the fact that it cost £7 for what is essentially a 2p piece of plastic with a couple of cable ties.

I think I'm probably stuck with bar mounting due to the 50mm stem I'm running (KORE 35mm...) It's a nice square friendly profile, but not terribly long for mounting anything lke that.

What's the standard one like when bar mounted then, possibly with a wrap of inner tube or similar below it for friction? I lke the look of the RAM one, but it would be nice to get mounts on two or three bikes, and two of the three have 50mm stems. The other is 110m so has plenty of space to fit...

I've never tried it bar-mounted but it already has a two-way rubber pad underneath to reduce friction so it should work ok.

The Garmin mount shown by Devash mounts solidly to either stem or bars, spot-on about the cable ties being a pain for maintenance though

IME within a few months the mount begins to wear and my Etrex will now bounce out on some (admittedly poorer) tarmac roads

+1 for the lanyard, and I've added my phone number to the boot screen

The RAM with handlebar mount and EZ-ON is IMHO pricey but looks a good option, or you can get five or six Garmin clones for £10
