Hi folks, its a very long time since I've been here.
I'm now based in the Middle East, near Dubai, UAE. There is a good scene here and a lot of riding happens at night. Even at night though its hot, damn hot. Its not unusual for us to be riding in temperatures of 35 degrees at night during the summer.
My home build light that was built with racks of help and some bits from posters on this forum might have had its day. Have a look here for the details http://ianganderton.wordpress.com/2007/10/21/my-cateye-abs-halogen-to-cree-led-project/
One of the LED's has failed and both the batteries have died. I think the led has failed due to the unit cooking up once to often.
So what I'm after is a cost effective bar mounted light that gives a nice floody beam somewhere just over 500 lumens. It needs to have excellent heat management.
I'm thinking that running a light at 70% will help. Most lights are designed to be run in more normal temperatures, de tuning a bright light should help. A programmable driver would be handy.
What do the STW collective recommend?
Any help gratefully received
Ian
Assuming it's not going to get wet, drill vents in it?
boxelder- sand and dust are as big a problem here and get everywhere so sealed is important
How much money you got? trout or luminous both have sophisticated drivers that maage heat nd allow the led not to run flat out IIRC
Or a DIY MCE led with a taskled driver which is what I have - that allows a nice widish beam and also has a het sensor that turns the led down if overheated
TJ- 3 are currently in the running 1- Troutie Dominator 300ukp. 2- Exposure Maxx D 253ukp. 3- Hope R4 Epic 231ukp. 2 and 3 are available from chain reaction and I'm putting together an order anyway so the carriage is free in effect.
1- I've know Chris for quite a while, I was building my first light at the same time as Chris was getting to grips with his milling machine. I like what he does A LOT and the fact he uses (I think) Tasled drivers means I could detune it to cope with the heat. Its the most expensive option especially when factoring in the extra carriage ๐
2- I've always liked the simplicity of no cables but I'm not a fan of the 13hr charge ๐
3- The Hope R4 looks tiny and cool. It has a range of run options and the Endurance (2 battery option) comes it at a pretty good price)
I dont know the luminous options
Hi.
Send me a mail if you wish and we'll see what I can do for you.
PSA:
7/601s are now discounted, coming as a head unit and power cable only, you supply your own battery (may not be applicable in this particular case though)
Good price, I just haven't had time to update the website.
I am moving to the Midlands, very soon.
Cheers TJ.
What about Ay Up? Used all over the world and seem to be pretty tolerant of most things.
Just seen the CRC price for the Hope R4.
I think the a Model 401 - XLite might be in the hunt too.
XLite has yet to be web'd, but it uses a smaller battery, hence it will be cheaper than the prices for the Lite and Pro.
Hi Ian,
I'm a regular visitor to Dubai and wondered about taking my bike, I've heard the area around Hatta has some good trails. Are there any regular groups that go out and any special bike requirements?
Cheers,
Dean

I've used my AyUps in similar conditions in Oz - no problems.
(Nor should there be - they are a Queensland company so they're used to heat)
Hi Trout ๐
IIRC, you've had a few Libs out to the Middle East and Africa.
Gets pretty hot there.
Not sure if any of mine have made it that far yet.
But Got a couple of lights in California, amongst other places.

justatheory- have a look at my blog page for mountain biking in the UAE/Dubai, it will be a good starting point for you http://ianganderton.wordpress.com/uae-mountain-biking/
A couple of people have got liberators and they do cook up in the heat of the summer. Of course with taskled drivers they are set to step down but it is a pain.
I'm going to go for a Dominator and run it at reduced power and experiment with settings to work out whats best.
