Would you:

Increase rear to 180mm (from 160mm) there's some blackening of the rotor, dunno if that's overheating or pad contamination.

Increase front to 203mm (from 180mm)

Do both of those things

Or

4 pot on the front: from Hope X2 to E4

Do all of those things

Buy shimano slx, 180mm front 160mm rear.

What was the question again? ๐Ÿ˜‰

FWIW I have just this morning been riding around on my 203mm/180mm slx set up out here and even with my death grip dragging, not a sniff of bad behaviour from the brakes. Except the din, must get some organic pads in there.

Sell the Hopes, fit Shimanos.

You're a lump, if 203/180 stops you, it'll do for me I reckon.

Edit: Don't like shimano brakes, they're a bit on/off for my taste.

If you're overheating your current brakes, going up a rotor size front and rear would be a sensible thing to do. Whilst you're at it, fit new pads too.

Going to a 4 pot caliper is likely to give you a little more power, and better modulation, but I don't think it will bring about the change you're after from what will be a fairly expensive exercise.

I've just stuck a 203 on the front of mine (it was 180/180) and it's great. I'm around 70kg for context (about 5kg heavier than I want to be- damn the Co-op and their deluxe triple chocolate cookies! And my lack of willpower... ๐Ÿ˜ก )

Thanks Mboy, that's what I wanted confirmed about 4 pots. Kayla1 I'm 70kg so I think I'll move my 180 to the back and get a 203 for the front like your set up

Will a Revalation (20mm front axle if that makes a difference) be ok with that?

When I got my bikes the shop recommended 2 x 180 on Hope 4 pot. Told me for my type of "enduro" mincing inc visits to the Alps that was ample as I wouldn't be trying to slow down quickly from high speeds. I'm 78-80kg fyi.

Heh, ok, sorry for not answering the actual question. I only posted that as I personally switched from Hope X2s to Shimano and once I got used to the difference I never looked back. Bigger rotors will definitely help. ๐Ÿ™‚

Mint, I went the other way as I found Shim too grabby for my tastes. plus had some money so fancied something a bit more bling!

Having moved up here I'm having to re think all my bike standards! new tyres, wider bar, shorter stem, now; more brakes!!

Bigger rotors will stop you quicker at the expense of modulation. Rotor contamination looks like black smears whereas overheating looks like a bruise

Very little to choose between E4s and Zees when both are new but the edge goes off the XT-on-steroids feel of the Zees when the pads are only slightly worn whereas the Hopes keep on working til the death

E4s also have a heavier feel which may become tiresome during sustained descents. Zees as light as all Shimano. No complaints about modulation.

Max rotor size on Revelations is 203mm so you'll be fine.

I'd up size the rotors before I forked out for complete new brakes too

I've just went from Hope M4s 183mm front and rear to Shimano XTs 203/180 earlier this year and initially I wondered what the hell had I done as I couldn't get on with the Shimanos but after about 3-4 rides I got used to them and now love them. Won't be going back to Hope unless the Shimanos fall to bits within the first year of ownership given how stupidly expensive the Hope brakes are in comparison now.

Another vote for just upsizing! Go LARGE!

(and you get a "free" 180mm rear updgrade moving existing front disc to back, assuming it ain't too knackered already (you may have to buy some new spacers for the back caliper as well as the front btw)

rocketman, thanks, definitely contamination then, no noise though, which made me wonder.

Think I'll try 203/180 combo, shame about modulation though as it's the best thing about the Hopes.

max: yeah, good point thanks for the reminder!

Just one word of advice on revelations fitted with 203mm discs, you may find you are replacing left hand wheel bearings and fork bushings more often! I speak from experience but then I'm 17 stone odd in riding kit.....it's got that bad I've swapped out the Revs and gone back to my heavier bullied reserve forks..Bombers 55r.....
I run Hope Tech Evo V4 plus twin vented floating rotors in 203mm front and rear on the AM full suss....great set of brakes but overkill for anything except lift assisted riding and heavy for XC/trail biking.
