Just had a promo email through from Rutland cycles, has anyone ever actually paid £35! for an Altura Hi-vis vest?
I'm all for people being Safe and seen but Hi-Vis vests are free issue to half working population of the country and can easily be purchased for under £5 from a garage/Halfords... How did Altura get to an RRP of 35 notes? is it super low drag or something?
Does any other cycling kit score this high on the "Emperors new clothes" scale?
Regular Hi Viz vests are done up with velcro, which tends to come undone when the wind gets inside them at speed.
Even so, I can't see how this is worth £35

As per Graham, buy a normal one and then ask a local clothing repair shop to add a zip, that should cost less than a £10.. £15 all in.
C'mon its obvious why they are that pricey.
They give you night vision. Says as much on the back.
good spot Jamie, obviously as a Non Altura customer my vision isn't acute enough to have spotted that..
£30 extra for the addition of a zip eh?
I might make my own with poppers and only charge £28.98 - its a relative bargain, any takers?
Actually I would pay more for one with a zip - not £35 tho. The night vision might be useful, for stealth missions and all that. Can you switch off the hi-vis when you switch on the night vision ??
Except it's not just a building site high viz jacket with a zip added is it? It's a light, fitted, cycling-specific gilet with windproof front panels, a mesh back, elasticated hem and arm-holes, but with lots of added reflective, which will boost the price a little. So the price is about par for the course for a cycling gilet.
Of course, if you think a standard refective jacket with an added zip is the same thing, you're onto a bargain.
A quick Google has found much cheaper Altura High Viz Vests, thier standard one appears to be around £19.99
Ah yes, calling it a "gilet".
That's got to add £10 over the price of a "vest".
I think BWD has made a fair point. I'll stick with ny £3.50 velcro one for winter commuting duty though.
Bit OT, but what's the point in the black one? Surely that's form over function. I know the reflective bits will show up nicely at night, but at dusk (when not all drivers remember to turn on their lights) or in daylight fog it'd be next to useless.

Peole justify expensive kit on the most spurious of grounds all the time
