I've not seen that many women's pro races, but the ones I have seen I've really enjoyed. Certainly more than many men's races. Once they are in their kit the gender isn't really obvious and it's impossible to tell how fast they are going on the TV anyway. So what you are left with is the racing, which always seems to be open and full of attacking riding. More like men's racing from the '30s than the tightly controlled races we get these days.
So, great racing, positive role models and a bit of glamour. What's not to love?
I think taxi's comment is sort of on the mark. I think that even the top women would struggle to stay in the group in an average E12 domestic race.....at a guess, I'd say that your average 2nd Cat would be fine in the womens peloton....I may be wrong though. Didn't Nicole Cook ride in a domestic mens race a few yaers back? Ras Cymru maybe?
The same argument can be made against almost any women's sport. As a rule, men have biological and social advantages which mean that they are able to go a bit faster. This makes not one whit of difference to the spectacle, I don't care about the absolute speed of the race, I care about the competitiveness. As anyone who watched the women's road race at the Olympics (to pick one of many examples) can testify, that is in no way diminished by their being women.

I personnally don't see whats wrong with looking good on a bike, as long as you can back it up with some skill and capability. Lets face it, those girls could kick most of the guys on this forum into touch, and look bloody marvelous doing it! If i even looked half as nice as that on my bike i'd be well cuffed 😉 And it ain't exactly as if they are just dumb models, they look good because they are fit and well trained, and surely that's a great role model for a lot of kids and people wondering about what to do with / in their life etc??

I'm quite sure that some of the girls really dislike having to parade and pose for photographers and assorted PR types. Yes, they may have great figures but it's quite demeaning too.

I bet they don't feel demeaned at all. Its the launch of a new team, of course the're going to dress in the team kit and and pose with the bikes. Its what all the teams do men and women. what else would they do ????

TBH if you're not comfortable being looked at in tight clothes you won't get far in road cycling, gymnastics, swimming, and any number of other sports. If you stick a snowboarder in a swimsuit for a photoshoot, that's exploitative, if you stick a swimmer in a swimsuit it's not really the same is it?
There's always going to be perving involved but in this case it's not even like it's the most skintight and perv-compatible of kits, it's sensible riding kit.

I'm sorry but I have put in my tuppence worth here.
To suggest that men commenting on the attractiveness of women cyclists (because they surely are, which is thanks in no small part to their obvious dedication to fitness in general) is the reason why not more women participate in the sport is utter nonsense!
If that was the case we wouldn't see any women swimmers who as a rule generally wear a lot less than cyclists or for that matter female track and field athletes, and gymnasts who as I am sure you are all aware also wear lycra whilst competing.
To suggest that a man commenting on the attractiveness on any women at any time regardless of the context i.e sport personality or TV presenter or the woman behind the meat counter at Sainsbury's is 'Puerile' is quite frankly ridiculous in the extreme. So long as the comment is not vulgar or abusive then I fail to see how it can possibly be seen as offensive.
In the big wide world that we all live in, 'Gentlemen' 'Men' 'Blokes' like to appreciate nice 'Women'. And dare I say nice 'Women' like to be appreciated and actually also appreciate well intentioned and articulated flattery. To suggest/pretend otherwise says more about the person writing such drivel than it does about the real world and the real people that live in it!
