[#5804545]

Looking to treat myself to a GPS system for the bike.
Interested in the MIO 505 with all UK maps and WiFi for £229.99 but is a Garmin as good for the money?
Mio has a good battery life and good reviews.
Never had either, currently leaning towards the Mio for the similarities to the windows phone OS live tiles.

I've got an Edge 510, it seemed the best out there at the moment (still does but only just) but I find it bloody frustrating, looking back over data you can see it dropping sensor data pretty regularly. It's supposed to have been fixed with recent updates but it's still not perfect. Garmin seem to release a product before it's ready then use consumers as beta testers and release software updates for the next two years, another example of this is the Garmin Connect app crashing about 25% of the time I try to pair the Edge to my phone. Mine also had to go back after 3 months as it refused to switch on, they replaced it but took 2 weeks to do so, I'm being picky but when something fails after 3 months I expect it to be replaced on the spot. Never used a Mio.

Hmm, to be fair I'd never heard of Mio but they get good reviews. Your review has moved me away from the Garmin.

Hmmm should I put a positive spin on it too? The sensor dropouts are minor and 99% of the time I only notice 'cos I'm geeking out (too much) after a ride, you might not even notice (?). I find the configuration ability of all the data fields fantastic and the battery life of the unit is brilliant even when I have my phone connected. I've also read Garmins after warranty/crash support is really good. Didn't want to put a massive downer on the product, just honest feedback about the issues I've had that you might not pick up on in reviews. I still think it's a decent product, just at times frustrating.

A friend of mine bought a Mio after losing a Garmin - she loves it, particularly the 'surprise me' function which generates routes for you. I haven 't really used it myself. My personal take on Garmins en masse is that the hardware is great, the user interface never seems intuitive to me. So that's probably not much help then... 🙂

I'm not a techy person, i need a system that 'just works' and doesn't need a degree in computing to sort out when it gets a glitch.
