I'm looking to get a minion 650b (tubeless) and am a bit surprised to find its not available in the MaxxGrip compound. You'd think with Schwable offering decent range of wide soft tyres that maxxis would do the same. But instead it seems the best you can go if you want a minion is a 2.3 MaxxTerra.

Has anyone tried a minion MaxxTerra? I'm a bit worried that it will be too hard for more aggressive/dh riding.

Is it that surprising? If you want aggressive/DH riding then surely you're on one of the 2.5 options? (In MaxxGrip or SuperTacky). Seems more the case to me that Maxxis have it right, rather than shoving a super soft compound onto a tyre that will only last 5 minutes because its too weak, they save it for the burly options?

The MaxxTerra compound is pretty bloody sticky - on the shoulders it's comparable to the black chili compound on a Baron and gripper than any Trailstar Schwalbe. Can you get any similar Schwalbe tyres in Vertstar?

You can get the dh compound magic mary which id say is fine on a trail bike as its light. Personally I love the minion so would like to see a wide light soft minion. So is the MaxxTerra generally considered to be ok then?

Three weeks in Canada and I'd say most are using 2.3 Minions Front and rear. Or HR up front minion on rear seems popular. Awesome combo's and great traction. Not slow on trails or the peda upl. Beyond black diamond trails, bigger the better

Schwalbe don't offer anything as grippy in Hans Dampf than a Maxx Terra, and in the Magic Mary Vert Star only available in Super Grav, which is nearly a DH tyre anyway.... Magic Mary in Vert Star is not a tyre I would call light. Add 120g or so and you can move up to a bigger, dual ply Maxx Grip or Super Tacky Shorty. Would it be good to see a Maxx Gripp EXO TR? Sure why not choice is nice ๐Ÿ™‚ That said, I reckon the DD Minions will be along shortly (Maybe Eurobike?) which will have the DD casing and Maxx Gripp compounds. Thats going to be the #1 choice for lots of people.

Given the wear rate on Maxx Terra Minions I also think its as soft as a 'trail' tyre needs to go. Its a mix of 50/42a compounds. Given the 42a is almost as soft as you can run on a tyre before it becomes pretty much a race only tyre with very few rides in it, this seems to be a pretty sensible mix to me. If you want a comparison to Schwalbe its hard to say, Maxx Terra is definitely faster wearing than Trailstar (alhough the durometers may be the same - Schwalbe dont release theirs, and of course thats only half the story anyway) and feels more grippy, so it suggests a softer compound than a trail star. Vertstar may well have a softer middle as the wear rate is high, but I dont think its softer at the edges than a Maxx Terra as they seem to last around the same time.

Thanks for the replies. Wanted to check before buying as maxxis tyres aren't cheap so want to be sure I get the right ones. Think I'll give these MaxxTerras a go then as the consensus seems to be they're ok

If MaxTerra is the 3C compound then I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Agree the Butcher Grid is also a good alternative.

Really? I can wreck a trailstar MM/HD in a matter of days of lift assisted riding. The Minion Maxx Terra I've replaced the MM on the front with, if I cleaned it up, could almost be considered 'as new' by comparison, and I've done more miles on it.
