[#3177247]

Needed for trailside duties so my workshop ones would be too large.

As always, thank you so much. 🙂

😆

OK druidh, there's millions of Leatherman's on their website which was obviously designed by a man. 😉 I've specified cycling multitools and there's still loads.

I was assuming you already had a multi-too. Just go for something basic like the Skeletal CX.

Cheapo Draper ones are what you want. Quite well made for about £3. I've never used them trailside in nearly 10 years...

But look at the price! Yes, have a basic multi-tool but just need pliers. Don't suppose that small, lightweight pliers exist?

Personally though I use a small pair of Gerber 400 pliers on a multi tool, they fold up tiny, weigh next to nothing and even have a pair of scissors to trim snagged nails, when out on the trails 😉

How good do they need to be?
Too many label snobs in here, I've got a totty wee pair of pliers, made by Ronsol or suchlike, its a folding multi-tool thing in a wee pouch. Probably about the size of a box of matches. Got a blade, a nail file and a wee LED torch on it, which is surprisingly bright. 😀

So many replies and suggestions - thank you! Love the idea of trimming nails on the trails - normally make do with an emery board, ahem.

druidh - no, didn't realise you had done it. Thought you were doing Lejog. Could I have a link please?

Well, I was out of the virtual world for two months when I moved house recently. Have saved the link and look forward to reading that!

I didn't manage to get to Scotland this year, still wanting to do the Corrieyairack Pass whilst I have a suitable bike. 🙂

Pliers - apart from Maplins, where else am I likely to be able to physically hold, [s]weigh[/s] and try out?

Why do you need pliers? I never carry any and only once use some my mate carries - for straightening a chainring on the tandem which could have been done with a rock

there is a mini leather man if you must have some

Infact CG I have a mini leatherman somewhere you can have if you want - I ain't used it for years

Another vote for the Leatherman Squirt P4.
Small tool, but very capable and well put together.

the topeak alien range used to have one with some very small pliers. good for getting pads out of discs, etc.

A small pair of slip jaw wrenches might be worth considering - can be used to grip, but can also replace a spanner at a pinch.

Question: why would you need pliers on the trail?
Or ever for bike maintenance for that matter? Don't think I ever use a pair on the bike.

good for getting pads out of discs,

There's one good reason. If they have some sort of snips on them, they're good for fitting cables too.

Edit: and removing stubborn Powerlinks.

Hmm, my pads and powerlinks come out/apart pretty easily by hand.
And snips on pliers are terrible for cutting cables in general. Cable cutters are much better!

Who takes cable cutters with them though when a pair of pliers would be more versatile?

Tightening up tubeless valve and, as thomthumb mentioned, removing pesky thorns. 🙂

Powerlinks though? Hmmm, good idea!

Not a good used for the tubeless valve. I've managed to pull a valve right through the rim (ripping the rubber bit off in the process) with just my bare fingers!!
