[Closed] Minds made up... Singular Swift! Now, geared or Single speed?

Now the decision has been made on what frame, I'm toying with the idea of rigid forks and single speed.... but not a fixie.

Whats the pros and cons of one gear? What would be the compromised gear ratios?

Help? Anyone?

Just build it up geared and keep in in the same gear all the time, when you've had enough of single speed, just start using the shifters

🙂

What a brilliant idea. I bet those people who have committed to single speed feel a bit silly now 😉

I like both, I particualrly like that riding SS over the winter means I've got perfectly good XT kit for the summer that's 4 years old and barely past the 1% stretched mark 🙂

On the bike choice point, has anyone tried a lot of 29ers? AFAIK they all seem to have the same geometry, yet asking arround some people rate some bikes and others rate other bikes?

Is there any difference (apart from weight) between a GT Peace and a Singlular Swift for example? Or should I just pick a top tube length and a budget?

Mine's geared. I'm very happy with it. I also have a SS but I won't be SSing my Swift - it's too versatile to hobble it like that 😉

TINAS - I've tried lots of 29ers - So far, the Swift is the only one I've enjoyed riding. The others all just felt a bit steady. I suspect though that other 29ers with more recent geo will ride well too.

You do know why human beings evolved from monkeys and developed opposable thumbs?

+1

I initially ran my Swift as a single speed but it is such a good frame I felt that I wasn't getting the best out of it so I stuck a 1X9 drivetrain on it. Feel much happier with it in its current set up.

I have tried lots of 29ers from On one frames, Kona, Yeti, GT and Singular.

The swift 'feels' great and I run mine SS. I am not sure of the geo but it rides very very simialr to a GT Peace. Yes I know they are both steel but they felt very similar. It might be due to the frame material but I liked both.

The yeti is alu and carbon and is a completely different feel.

Run it SS, its great for winter riding and great for training. Pop gears on in summer (if you must 🙄 ) and away you go.
Personally, riding SDW and Trail centres, the SS is quicker than a geared bike and more fun.

Thats just my thoughts 😆

Any other thoughts on the Yeti? Seen a deal and am considering one.

Running mine as a rigid SS, but it depends where you live.

Anyone got or rate the RockShox Reba RL Air 100mm 29er Fork (with Poplock) for going on the Swift? Considering getting some as they are going cheap.

yeah On One, but don't buy them all up until I've made my mind up 😉
Half Price 🙂

Thoughts on them? Can't find any reviews on-line.

Best thing about these threads are that they get all the Swift owners in one place for additonal questions 🙂

Anyone tried towing a bike trailer with the cowled drop outs? Any bodging required?

What size of seat collar do they take? 31.8 I assume?

I have Reba Races @ 100mm and they're spot on.

I had a look for my trailer and don't reckon it'd work without some fettling - a much longer QR and spacer maybe.

I'd have guessed 29.8 as it's a 27.2 post but I'm not sure. Can check when I get home though I'm sure someone else will get there first. It does come with a seat clamp though so you don't need to buy one.

30.0 IIRC? They come with a clamp anyway.

Any 6footers give me an idea about sizing, torn between a mendium and a 110mm stem or a large and a 90mm stem. Between my 2 (26" hardtail) bikes those are the two setus I currently have, although the shorter stem is on a considerably slacker bike.

6ft 4" - 34" inside leg 🙄 , Large frame with 90mm stem and layback Thomson post if that helps.

My XL is spot on for me at 6'5" - reckon medium might be rather short BUT mine is quite tall so it's possible that a L may not have much clearance - guess it depends on how long your legs/body are...

32" jeans, trousers a 33" depending on the cut.

Thinking large as it more mile muncher than rock cruncher.

The big top is amazing, I love the Swift but the Big Top rocks. You can feel the carbon working, absorbing trail harshness. Having owned an On One Scandal 29er being all alu, the Big Top feels like it has rear suspension !
Got mine from BETD with a free King Headset if that helps with your deal hunting !

Get one - you will love it 😆

You can run a 'trailgator' with the swift dropouts as is, its a bloody tight fit but does JUST work. The tube clamp sort of points down to the floor ish as the dropouts prevent any other position and the tube, will JUST reach retracted.
Not sure about any other trailer contraptions 😀

I want to keep the spec within budget £1100 with a view to upgrading parts when more funds become available.

I run mine 1x10 and think it's perfect gives me the versatility to use for lots of applications plus I am not fit enough for SS 😳

plus have Reba RL 100mm and find them a perfect match, but like the option of the rigids too
