Out riding my favourite Ayrshire trails today, scorching lunchtime ride, awesome views too. The much vaunted west of Scotland midge was outgunned today, big style. Clegs. holy christ!.

Bloody huge (size of a wasp!) and with the ability to bite through either base layer or gloves... One actually got a blood stain on my glove?!.

Not sure if the local Nuclear power station is maybe a factor! ๐Ÿ˜†

Bain of my life too, I must smell of horse shit when I sweat because they always have a go at me......although not since I started covering myself in Smidge!

Godless winged bastards, known to carry small children away and gang-rape innocent bees. Utterly unconcerned by Skin So Soft.

The only thing I've encountered to beat them were sand flies in New Zealand. Remember waking up in the middle of the night, clawing frantically at the bites over a week after being lunched on.

Yep, evil ****ers. They are apparently attracted by the vibrations a body makes. Now try driving a ride on mower for two hours in the middle if the Mendip countryside, vibrating away to itself this summer where there seems to be 100x the number! Evil evil little bastards.

I ended up on antibiotics with a horsefly bite this year. Swollen leg due to infection. They rip the skin off you and then lick up the blood, rather than suck you like midges.

Trying to explain to a Scottish doctor what a horsefly was, was rather interesting.

"If it was a dog bite, at least id know what to do. But its rather small for a horse bite".

They actually use their mouth to slice you open and then harvest your blood, as opposed to just puncturing the skin like a mozzie. That's why they get infected so easily - can get blood posioning and needs early treatment. A friend got red lines on his legs and had to go on antibiotics pretty quick!

It's a horrid thought and they are evil bastards.
