Anybody use them for riding in hot weather? Do they keep you as cool as a coolmax or similar top?

It depends on the the amount of Merino wool per square cm, they can be made to warm or cool you.

See the Icebreaker site for some details.
http://www.icebreaker.com/site/catalog/weight.html?gender=Man&range=Bodyfit&weight=150

Merino will however smell a lot less and is generally harder wearing than synthetic technical material, (although quality plays its part here).

That link states its constructed from both nylon and merino, so at a guess not super effective at heat management.

150 weight merino all summer here. It might not cool quite as much as synthetic, but it copes better with temp changes, doesnt smell and just feels nicer. Just watch your watch strap.

i wear light merino tshirts under cheap raceface or other riding tshirts. merino for wicking and comfort, the layer over to protect it ( wool doesn't like to get snagged ). it get's hot in the summer. when you're working hard on the bike, you're going to get hot. there's no magic bullet for that. teh GE top is probably good. it's a decent price and i've found their stuff well made.

I wear mine all year round. I have a fairly thick Adidas one, which is fine even. Never had an issue. Only gripe is the short zips on mine compared to my twin six lycra tops.

Cheers for comments. I'm doing a roadie 'light-touring' trip to Belguim and Holland in the summer and want somthing that doesn't look to 'bikey' (or pikey 😉 ) when sat in a cafe or strolling round the sights. Added bonus that I can get a few days wear out of it without stinking myself out. the GE top seems to fit the bill.

To my mind its absolutely perfect for that. icebreaker s/s tee in 150 weight looks just like a smart t shirt, packs small, and you could wear it for a week easy, then just rinse it and dry it either on your luggage or just on you.

My Howies merino T is great in all but the hotest of days. Not too think and is great as a base layer when it starts to cool down.

I am getting that Ground effects one next week to compliment my Howies.

Been wearing it a month and it still smells like new 🙂

You might want to have a look in TKMaxx at the moment, I picked up a Vaude 50/50 Merino/Nylon top for £15 last week, wore it last weekend on a pretty hot ride and it seemed quite cool and non smelly.
