I use Woolie Boolie merino socks. They are comfortable, warm in winter, not too warm in spring / autumn, and last well with machine washing.
I also have some Sealskinz merino socks which are toasty warm on wet winter rides but not so comfortable as the Woolie Boolies (because of waterproof membrane). They also have lasted well with machine washing.

For me, if keeping feet warm is part of the issue, you need shoes / boots of a larger size to accomodate thicker socks without being too tight.

Icebreaker here, they make boggy heather bashing a much less unpleasant experience as they stay warm when wet, and seem quite tough.

Mmmmmmmmm, only ever tried the DeFeet ones, so can't comment on others, but I love them so much they're my everyday socks. They're soft, comfortable, very hard wearing and you have to wear them for yonks before they smell! Wooleators are the standard sock, if you want something warmer and thicker the Woollie Boollies are the mutts nuts.

I'm fine there, I've got some Shimano winter boots (neoprene cuff & velcro straps?) can't remember what model thet are. I normally wear Sealskins or some old 'Gators Oversox' that I've had for years but me tootsies still get a bit chilly at times.

Kirkland Merino Trail socks from Costco - about a tenner for 4 pairs. Have done me proud for the last 3-4 years, great for hiking and biking and warm toes on cold days working in the Peak District

They are usually a bit more on ebay, my Costco membership has expired so I'll be asking a mate to get some for me in the next couple of weeks ready for this winter.

For general walking use I use Go Outdoors merino socks, usually on offer.

Cycling I use the Sealskinz merino socks.

Excellent article in the Onion about this very subject:
http://www.theonion.com/articles/cyclist-friend-explains-necessity-of-35-socks,18259/

Personally I prefer woolie-boolies and Icebreakers are great too. Smart only last a few washes.

Got a few, none is better or worse but they're different thicknesses. Woolie Boolies are thick, nice and warm but still fit in my regular shoes. Endura Baabaa are pretty thin, good allrounder socks but not as good for the cold. Sealskins merino liner is a pretty nice mid-warmth allrounder.

perhaps they had a batch because mine have wore through very quickly (not something I've suffered a lot with) with just general strolling about. I wouldn't buy again.

I have some but they're so thin I don't use them for cycling at all - just for casual use.

I always recommend Woollie Boolies and everyone who's tried them has been very pleased, though I've not tried any other brands. They stand up to normal machine washing in biological detergent, though that does make them slightly felted. Hand washing would keep them softer.

Not Merino, but just ordered these - hoping they are the usual Alpkit good kit:
http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16436&category_id=248

I also have Merino socks from Extremities (cosy, not so hard wearing), from Icebreaker (chuffing 'spensive but wearing well and most cosy in wellies/drysuits/kicking around in, less so in boots) and Teko (best of the lot)

For Winter, I use the SealSkinz merino wool socks. They are longer, ie mid-calf. Coupled with the Shimano boots, that should work perfectly, but boots do need to be a size larger.

My alpkit socks were a big disappointment. They were fine before they were washed, but now are really difficult to get on and they make this funny crackling sound as they're stretched...

They got washed with all my other wool socks at normal 40 degrees so not sure what I've done wrong.

My God! I put a thread on about Steve Peat & no-one answers, 29 replies about socks! Awesome!
Looks like the WoolieBoolies &/or Sealskins then. (does Peaty wear WoolieBoolies I wonder)
Thanks everyone!

I bought around 12 pairs of smartwool ones last year. some are mid thickness in a low cut which are good for summer riding and theres diffrent lengths and thicknesses of the others. some seem to be more tightly woven than others and are a diff sock. i cant remember which ones are which but they have done wonders for my dodgy feet.i had been getting flaky skin on my feet since i was a kid whenever i got my feet wet and its always been a mare to sort it out. with merino they help quite a bit and they feel bone dry after a days use when i kick off my shoes. I would often have have damp feet after wearing trainers at work with cotton socks but those days have gone.

They were selling for something like £4-6 quid a pair in sports direct.

Right. So, having NZ relatives, I was looking for possum fur / merino socks as recommended above...

+1 except I squeeze into my usual size 10 Tahos - just!
