I brought a xt 2x10 setup a few years back, came with a long mech. I have got a medium xt clutch mech in my bits box but unsure if it is compatible. Set up is 11-36 and 40-28. Bike is a cotic hemlock,

How will I know if it won't work? Will it not take up the chain slack on the small rings?

The Shimano tech sheet, all on their website, will tell you the tooth capacity of a medium cage mech.

Ive got a medium X5 mech on my 2x10, it came with 22x36 bottom gear and I put a 42 on the back and it worked fine, I didn't even have to lengthen the chain.
Im sure Shimano aren't much different.

I've always used a medium. 24-38 front, 11-36 rear. No problems here.
