Having ridden in a team for the last few years I have taken the plunge and will be riding solo this year. I am getting lots of riding in but tonight I intend to take myself to Box Hill and push my heaviest bike up the steepest slope a few times.
The questions are: Is this form of training going to stand me in good stead (I doubt I can stay on the bike up all the hills for 24 hours).
And how many kilos of mud should I stick to the bike to truly simulate the Mayhem experience?
as many as you can. And then a bit more. And how many kilos of mud should I stick to the bike to truly simulate the Mayhem experience?
It depends what you want to do with the race. Do you want to do really well, or just finish and not disgrace yourself?
I did it last year (goal the second of the two options above!) and my training was just riding really. I was doing turbo training sessions as well, but I was doing them anyway to boost fitness. I just tried to ride as much as I could and not be as lazy as I can be!
A huge part of it is mental, you've got to have something inside that makes you go and do one more lap, when really all you want to do is sit.
Thanks mrsflash. As long as a lot of it is mental then I should be ok. Am getting out as much as possible both on and off road. I just suspected that using the muscles for unfamiliar tasks (such as pushing up a hill) may require a bit of training to avoid bizarre new aches and pains on the day.
no need - i hear it'll be dry this year!
Well if it's as muddy as last year, pushing the bike was definitely needed as part of the training! As was sitting at the side of the course trying not to cry. ๐
