I like maxxis tyres- run mavic 819's UST rims - i dont know a great deal about the winter tyres they offer...
spring/summer and some of autumn tyres are usually crossmark ust rear, and ignitor/advantage ust front...
i like the speed of the crossmark on the rear, i like the grip of the other on the front 😆
what are my options for maxxis through winter mud?
where do you ride ?
to be honest i just use single ply swampthings (on 819's) but it gets quite muddy where I am. Work well with tubeless once you get them inflated......
Swampthings are great for proper muddy conditions, but they drag like hell on hardpack. I stuck with my High Rollers last winter and they were ok.
Like OW, I run Advantage front, Crossmark rear so interested in responses. Currently just planning to run Mud-Xs tubeless front and rear.
I'd put aside your brand loyalty and try spesh storm controls. Under £40 a pair if you shop around. As good if not slightly better than Mud X's, pretty much same tread pattern.
I used medusa front and back last winter. The same pair will be going back on once conditions dictate. Pretty similar to mud-x tread pattern,
edit - I used the non-UST version with stan's jizz.
interesting so far -
few points.... i ran bonty mud x tubeless last year - they are great in the mud/gloop but the sidewalls are quite thin and not particularly strong as i ripped one just as winter was ending - so im looking at proper UST options first as ive never had such problems with the LUST tyres from maxxis in probably 6 months of this year...
i ride the peak district hence i like a stronger sidewall....
so what are the mud based maxxis ones? or are they all gonna be as draggy as high rollers (which i have had before and hated in ust form)....
hmmm looking at the medusas' they do look just up my street! what is the rolling resistance like on them? not to draggy i hope? also people reviewing have said the tyre compound is really soft and may not even last one winter??!?!?!?
Used medusa's in UST and can recomend,
Go for the wider ones as they are small
Mud X tubeless ready (TR). End of thread. 😉
i ride the peak district
I switch from Adrents to Minions or aDvantages in the Peak.. don;t find the bit of mid warrents full mud tyres.
Agree with Simon, you don't really need mud tyres in the Peak. Minion 2.35 DHF front and rear is a good combo ime, tends to be more sludge than proper mud. A Minion 2.35 DHF EXO would be ideal, but they don't make one as far as I know. the 2.35 comes up quite small as well.
BWD, got me a 2.5 minion 🙂 not had a ride on it yet though.. bit busy at moment.
