Hi, just fitted a used Maxxis DHF to the front on my SS HT, and there's a noticeable wobble to the tread. Wheel is true, tyre is seated evenly all the way around. Is it rideable / safe to ride like this? Or is it good only for the bin?

Bike is mostly for local riding, texhy-ish XC, nothing too steep or gnarr.

How much wobble? I was told by one importer that there should be no visible wobble. If it's below 5mm I'd say it's acceptable.

I've had this with several Maxxis tyres after a puncture, it felt like a buckled wheel, I had both replaced under warranty by Tredz.

It's a used tyre, so no warranty. More than 5mm I'd say.

Ah right, could you pop it on the rear where you might not notice it as much?

Should be safe, unless it's really bad.

FWIW I've had a couple of quite bad wobbles on new Maxxis tyres, one HR2 doubledown was so far out of true that it rubbed the frame.

On an Orange.

As long as it's mounted correctly, I'd perhaps take it up with the seller.

Remount it and pump it up hard and really seat the bead by manipulating the tyre. In my experience can improve the wobble.

I had the same as Chakaping, big rub marks worn through on my chainstays. Stopped buying maxxis tyres, lots of other good options out there not giving me any issues.

I managed to nack a maxxis tyre by giving it a wobble. I achieved this by taking the perfectly straight tyre off one wheel (running tubeless by the way) then proceeding to remove all the lumps of dried up sealant from around the beads. I then put this tyre on a brand new wheel and noticed it was on the pi55. Tyre was properly seated too. So I removed it and noticed that at certain points around the bead the actual rubber had kind of become 'ruched up', causing the tyre to be distorted. I tried to even this all out but I never got it back to 100% true. So I'm not fastidious about clean beads no more.

I've had exactly the same issue on a new pair of Conti X-King Protection.

Yeah, i had the same with a X-king last week. I could feel it squirming around on the rear. Thought i'd buckled the rim. Swapped it out for an old Maxxis and it was almost dead straight.

Renowned for getting wobbles are Maxxis.
I’ve warped 2 just by hitting berms too hard with my substantial bulk.

Never happened to a different brand tho.
