[#2264128]

I'm going to order some tyres today. I'm going for a Minion DHF 2.35 for the front but i'm unsure whether to go for an Advantage 2.25 rear for a bit of speed or just go for a Minion DHR for the rear. What's the opinions of the two tyres i'm thinking of for the rear?

Anyone know of any good deals on them anywhere?

I've had both. I prefer the ADvantage overall as an all-rounder. It rolls better and has better side grip IMHO, but the sidewalls feel tissue thin compared even to the single-ply Minion. With that said I do quite like the DHR too. I have one fitted now mainly cos it's better for snow. I also quite like the way it slides predictably now that I'm used to it. It certainly doesn't roll as quickly as the ADvantage though.

I really like maxxis but choices = world o' pain

single/dual/lust
compound
sizing is different even between models

(In traditional stw style, however, I've never used an advantage or minion on the back, soz 😳 )

to add to the mix;

I'm running a DHF at the back (but reversed - it gives better grip, ime).

runnign the supertacky at the front and the 60 one at the rear. front is very draggy though.

That's the enternal dilema though isn't it. The winter is here now and when this snow melts its going to muddy, i've got swampthings for when it REALLY muddy but want something we can leave on most of the time. I know the Minion doesn't roll as well but may get more grip?

Interesting to here your comments about the sidewall as these will be ran tubeless......

Have a look at the Ardent too... Cracking tyre..

Infact, in the summer I run an Ardent front, and a Crossmark on the rear.

Don't bother with a Minion DHR. They're not that great. Definitely be better off with either another DHF on the rear (no need to reverse them) or the Advantage.

Whatever, check Next Day Tyres for good prices and, unsurprisingly, next day delivery.

I run minion ST 2.35 up front and advantage 2.25 60a out back. Both singleply running as tubeless. I find it the perfect set up. BUT, it's different depending where you live and what the ground is like. We don't get that much mud, not like the UK anyway.

I've put up a summary of the tyres here, to save me typing: Mazzis Minion Front, Advantage Rear (tubeless)

I've done another few reviews on a range of maxxis tyres I've used over the last 2 years, if you're interested have a dig around.

Advantage - One of the best all round tyres imo and light/faster than the minion.

Just realised you're planning running them tubeless too. I find them great tubeless, they last for a couple of months then you get that xxx wear pattern on the sidewalls and you need to replace them. Sidewalls have been fine but you need to keep the sealant topped up and pressure abouve about 30psi (for me). I had problems getting them seated but got around it. This is another issue (sidewalls wearing). You say you only get 6-9 weeks out of a set 😯

i don't like minion dhr. 2 dhf is much better or high roller rear even better. depend on how you value grip over speed if you, want more speed ,less grip go for adrent or advantage rear. not somthing i would do at this time of year though.

Hi neil, I'm a bike guide so ride 5-6 days a week. You'd more than likely get a bit more than that.

Really like the Minion DHF on the back but find it clogs dead easy in the mud (i know its not a mud tyre before anyone pipes up ) , think HR or Advantage is better this time of year

Its confusing reading peoples reviews of these tyres, some say the sidewalls are fine tubeless and others say that they are not. Maybe i should look at some tubeless specific tyres.......

I run mine tubeless with joe's strips and sealants and they've been fine.

I'm running a DHF at the back (but reversed - it gives better grip, ime).

I'm running DHF front and back after previous comments on here. Tried it reversed on the back - didn't notice much difference in traction but it did seem to lose grip under braking on steep slippery descents. Now running the rear the proper way round and seems better. Anyone else found this?

I'd agree - you lose a bit of braking because of the way the ramps orientated are but I did think there was better grip (for the same reason). Most braking effort is at the front anyway?

Someone mentioned Next Day Tyres, but they're nae the cheapest for Maxxis any more. Their prices jumped about a fiver a few weeks back (lucky I bought an ADvantage the week previous :). Merlin prices are pretty decent though.

There is 10% off at Next Day Tyres if you spend over £50 with the code NEXTDAY33 though...

UK: high roller 2.35, 60a, single ply, kevlar

Having Fun Abroad : 2.5 High roller, 42a, dual ply

The holliday tyres have more drag than Soho on a Friday night though! Might take the smaller tyers with me and try them out for a day, judgeing byt the cuts an nicks on the sidewalls, and the number of pinch flats on others SP tyres though the dual ply was doing its job.

Maxxis's older tyer models that come in 2.1/2.35/2.5/2.7 sizes come up really small, (high rollers, minion, swamp thing, etc) but the newer ones (ADVantage etc) that come in 2.2/2.4 are more conventional sizes.

I'd say Minion DHF on the rear and HR 60a or supertacky up front is the ideal combo.

its more a sidewall issue now, the eternal weight over longevity battle!

If Maxxis bring out an EXO version of the 2.25 Advantage then I reckon that will be the best tyre I could hope for for almost all of the time. The Advantage is my favourite tread pattern of all the ones I've tried and I really liked my 2.4s but they were just a little on the large side. The 2.25 would be ideal but the slightly fragile sidewalls can be a bit of a nuisance. EXO sidewalls would sort that out.

Fingers crossed

I run the Kevlar DHF 2.35 60A because they are lighter than wire beads and they seem to have amazing resistance to pinch flats, although TBF I have not used the wire beaded ones for comparison.

Get mine from JRA - not many places stock the Kevlar DHF's and JRA's service has been excellent

neil, as for the sidewalls I find the singleply OK for my normal riding. It's pretty rocky here and we have a lot of big, rough descents but having said that I try to ride quite smoothly. If I'm riding full on DH stuff then I've got dual ply tyres.

I run DHF 2.35 single ply on the front and a 2.1 Advantage out back - both tubeless. Been a very good combo. Originally had a 2.25 Advantage on the rear but that came up bigger the 2.35 DHF so switched to the 2.1 which is only just smaller than the DHF. Recommended.
