Was out riding the other day when I came to a lovely swoopy left hander. Hit it pretty hard with the bike lent over (thanks to a recent Jedi session) but when I came out of the turn I could feel something wasn't right. The front wheel was wobbling pretty bad. I limped it home and took it to the LBS today thinking the wheel had dinged or bent out of true. However, to their credit, the LBS said the wheel was dead true and it was the tyre that was deformed.
The tyre is a Maxxis DHR II 2.3 Exo dual compound and I was running tubeless but not silly low pressures (25 psi ish). I'm a bit annoyed as it had about 80% life and was working well on the front but slightly proud that I cornered hard enough to deform it!
So is this just bad luck? Is it an issue with Maxxis in general? I would otherwise be happy to get the same tyre again but a bit hesitant if this is a known issue?
Done the same to 2 tyres. a DHF and a high roller 2.
seems a fairly common theme on TR maxxis, as friend as reported similar...
Only tyre i've ever done that to is a shorty :/
You should get a warranty replacement for that - most of the tyre companies are pretty good about carcass deformation failures.
Hadn't thought about warranty. Have just sent a message via their site asking about it. Cheers.
You need to speak to the shop you bought the tyre from for a warranty claim rather than Maxxis directly.
Hmmm.... Bought it from Evans (Tesco vouchers!). Guess I'll have to try them but bought online and the nearest shop is miles away.
I've had 2x High Roller IIs do this too.
2 Minion DHF's have gone the same way for me.
First one was after a burp on the top of a cliff in Spain where I almost shat myself.
Second one seemed to happen between the tyres being fitted to one wheel then another. ๐
