anyone running one yet on 650b? how does it compare to a spesh slaughter grid? looks a great tyre on paper and a good weight to at 765 including silkworm protection

tempted try it with a HR2 3c upfront for spring/summer duties

I've been riding one for 3 months. It's pretty much as expected: fast rolling; good, predictable grip when you lean it over; noticeably poorer braking on most surfaces. I have one gripe, which is that it seems to need quite high pressure to stop it squirming when cornering hard. Whether that's due to having just one row of knobs and those getting compressed into the tyre, or the whole carcass folding, I'm not sure (3C kevlar bead with silkworm). For the mixed riding I'm doing I think I'll probably go back to a DHR2 when it wears out. Don't know about the Slaughter I'm afraid except that, IME, a Maxxis tyre will last 3 times as long as the Spesh equivalent..

I had a rock razor in the alps. Very fast, cornered well, zero braking.

Looking to try an aggressor when they appear in the uk. Look like they will roll well.

Patiently waiting for the 26" version to come out.....

Currently have an Aggressor on the front and it's very good. So good, it's replaced the Minion DHF that was the default front tyre for spring/summer

if its like a slaughter grid it will be a good tyre for me personally, the minion SS with silkworm only weighs 765 which is a good chunk lighter than the spesh slaughter too which will help with rolling resistance etc

may give it a shot then when I can find stock of it

I'll let you know when we have enough consecutive dry days - have one mounted and ready to swap with the DHR2 I currently have on the back...

chief - you get the silkworm version or just standard? it weighs just 20g more for the silkworm version (as in cant see how 20g is going to protect from rocks any more than the normal one)

Interested also, slaughter is back on the rear of my bike now (maybe a bit too early :/ ) I rate Maxxis massively but the slaughter is such a good tyre and new the grid carcass so tough I haven't bothered to try it out yet.

slaughters fine now, unless your still riding deep in thick winter mud, if you ride rocky stuff its a good enough tyre for 7 months of the year (stick something grippier on back for november through to feb roughly)

id quite happily put one back on now to be honest, and im gonna try the minion SS as i like maxxis it weighs a good 150 grams less than the slaughter, they wear abit slower and they are tough with EXO casing

ideally for the 20grams extra i want the silkworm version but not sure thats really gonna do too much in the grand scheme of things

How does a Maxxis 2.3" compare to a Schwalbe 2.35"?

Got a Rock Razor on at the moment, but getting a little worn so thinking of replacing with an SS. I like fat tyres though and remember hearing Maxxis come up pretty small a while ago - still the case?

I've had one for a couple of months on my hardtail, been impressed with it so far. Obviously not great in mud and gets wild pretty quickly, but Minion DHF up front saves most incidents. Good size and weight (not as big as a Schwalbe 2.35) expect to use it up until autumn unless I ruin it. I've noticed some of the side knobs are starting to wear already, assume as there's a drop in height between the centre tread and edges they are more at risk from being pulled.

Got one from ACycles a couple of weeks ago, but not the silkworm version. Took about a week to arrive. Like it more than last years quick tyre,an Ikon and has much better side grip.

I put mine on 6 weeks ago.

I've found that at my usual pressure of 18psi, it drags just as much as a highroller. I've had to up it to 22psi to get it to ride above it's side knobs. That's with a 30mm external rim. It's pretty square. I weigh 60kg.

Now it runs almost as quick as an Ardent - but still not quite.

Mine is the silkworm and haven't punctured yet, but then I haven't punctured anything else other than at Antur.

Certainly grippy enough - even on slick climbs. Pretty impressed with that aspect - although as it wears it might lose that - don't know - it's my first semi-slick.

Never tried a Slaughter, but would like to.

Put one on in Feb, it was dead by the start of March with a big slash down it. That was silkworm 2.3.

Its quite narrow and square compared to a 2.35 Rock Razor. I prefer the Rock Razor as its still going after 18months use and it suits my wider rims better.

ta, I have 25mm ID rims and run rear tyres around 26-8psi tubeless so i'm hoping it will be ok.

Got a slaughter on the rear, been on since January. Will only change if I'm going off the man made trails.

I went from Slaughter to Minion SS, I found the Slaughter isn't as good for pedalling grip- really frustrating on technical climbs, when it loses grip it just spins out and you're done. Not that the Minion is massively grippier, it's just less bad when it loses grip. For everything else I found them pretty similar- the minion shoulder knobs seem to get in on the action a bit earlier

TBH it depends- pretty much anything short of a mud spike though. This weekend was minion dhf 2.5 and minion SS, in fresh innerleithen mud, made for a slippery but fast ride. Once summer arrives probably something a bit faster on the front.

You pretty much need to find out how you feel about the grip levels- there's some trails where, if it's wet, I just wouldn't fancy the semi slick at all. But then there's a huge spread where probably it's not as much grip as you might like, but it can still be great fun. Basically whether a rear wheel slide feels like imminent death, or whether it feels awesome.

2.5 shorty front, 2.3 SS rear.

Could go DHF front but I don't trust the weather just yet

Nah, don't do that, just see how you like it. For me the big shorty is for horrible steep muddy death, and I want rear wheel grip for that. But you might like the balance (or imbalance) For me, sticking the front and sliding the rear can be great but not if it means I go backwards down prospacker in the rain ๐Ÿ˜†

Last year I ran DHR2 2.3 front, Minion SS 2.3 rear. This year, somewhat by accident I've ended up on High Roller 2 2.4 front, Minion SS 2.3 year and I think they're really good together - both have a similar square shape with side knobs that rail, but are really loose and drifty when stood up (unless you're braking and then the HR2 grabs hard).
