Any thoughts on mavic rims, my rear one has split..... long story but it cracked when it was being 'mended' at a LBS.

Just got an xc717 rear for my Stumpy. 13 miles later and it's still okay...! Seems light and pretty strong.

Certain older models did that - 217 or 517 IIRC?

Think new ones are OK

Mavic generally make good rims. The higher-end ones build well and their braking surfaces are well machined and even (irrelevant to you if you have disc brakes, but convenient for the builder).

"Any thoughts on mavic rims" is a bit like "Any thoughts on Trek bikes" - what sort of rim was it and what do you use it for?

517s are prone to it. The eyelets start to pull out. I've done it to 2 rims that I've previously bent. It may be that there was a micro crack before you took it in there. Not seen it on any other mavic rims though. Which one was it?

I've had 2 pairs of 517's still run three sets of 717's and have just
got some xm819's as well, the first pair of of 517's rear split, the others have
never even gone out of true,
Intrestingly the first pair were built by phil corleys in MK, the rest
were all built by frank at merlin,

Draw your own conclusion on that ๐Ÿ™‚

Mavic are known in Roady circles for developing stress marks and splittlng at the eyelets when the spokes are over tensioned. My local wheel builder claims he has no end of problems with mavic. Since i started building them myself I've had no problems at all. take from that what you will.

the rim is 719 and has about 2.5 k miles on it. built by merlin, straightned twice before

have run the front 618 for eight years with no worries or nipping in. built by the legendary monty of condor cycles.

maybe its all about the build!

My experience of 719s: had them for several years and they've taken loads of abuse and never needed truing.
I've noticed the spokes aren't tensioned as highly as other wheels I have.

I've run 719s for years with no problems at all. I don't think 618s are available any more, but they were double eyeletted so I'd be surprised if they cracked. They're nice to build with too.

618s are discontinued. A real shame as they're amazingly strong. I replaced a cracked 517 with a 618 and tried to break it for 5 years. It's still sat in the garage, looking thin but still ridable and round.
I agree with folks that spoke tension caused 517s to break.

I've always run Mavics. 517 (rim-brake), then 317 (disc-brake), 717 (disc-brake), with a spare set of 317 (disc-brake).

I also use Open-Pro rims on my commuter. All on Hope hubs.

I'm about 6ft, 90kg, and no finesse and I've never had problems - whether shop-built, 2nd hand, built by me.
