Anyone got any ideas on this? I keep getting a terrible squeal and chain suck, when freewheeling at speed downhills. Taken the freehub apart, cleaned it all out and put it back together and did it again. Took it to lbs who took it apart cleaned it and put it back to gather and it did it again.

Anyone got any experience of this and how to remedy? Don't want to by a new freehub body if that isnt the issue!

Mine was doing the exact same thing! Five year old crossmax ST's - it's the pawls that have gone, I just got my LBS to sort it out and now it's fine.

There's at least one other thread about that on here.

Mine did it. Took it apart and inside was all pristine. Worked for a bit longer but then did it again. Axle was also ever so slightly bent too, so replaced the wheel.

If it's reasonably economical to replace the entire gubbins (axle, bearings, freehub, etc.), I might look in to it, just to have a spare wheelset.

I don't think it's anything to do with the pawls...it's more likely to be the freehub, often the hub is worn under the freehub bushing too. Look on Ebay for the Hub Doctor kits, cheaper than a new freehub! If you do want a freehub though, I can sell you a new one for half price with some pawls too (£20 instead of £40).

I have found as a quick fix, a bit of grease on the nylon washer will shut it up but not solve it. A kit from ebay is simple and cost effective. New nylon washer, insertion tool and pawls. Its an easy self service..

Check if you can wobble the cassette side to side and it seems excessive, its an indication that this white nylon washer needs attention. Care when taking it apart as there is a small spacer washer in there that is easily lost...

Yes as d45yth says its the nylon bearing.
Mine did so bought the Hub Doc kit from ebay, it did it again after a short time. Checked and found metal part (spindle?) worn badly.
Mavic wanted to sell me a new hub for £145.00+VAT
I greased it up and it lasted about 3 months before needing lubing again.
Been doing it every three months or so ever since.

All Mavic free hubs are supposed to lubed with mineral oil regularly, or the bush in the freehub will wear, causing the squeal!
Check the Mavic website

Cheers for all the answers, so do I need a new bushing? The whitefish ring that sits at the bottom of the freehub? I might take you up on the freehub offer as can't afford a whole new hub.

Have a look at where the bushing touches the hub...has the anodising wore off and you can see bare aluminium? If so, buy a Hub Doctor kit off Ebay. If there's no wear or it's only slightly worn, I can soon sort you out with this freehub I've got.

I've had a dragging freehub for a while which I couldn't cure until I read the mavic service guide.
As above - used disc brake mineral oil on the nylon ring & now its super smooth.

The whitefish ring

Just for the record, I used a Squid ring after watching Kerry Katona on the telly. I can confirm that the ones sold in Iceland are poor quality and have sizing issues... though I will say a lot of yummy mums do go to Iceland...

I would stick with the kits from Hub Doctor imho... plus the Iceland ones tend to be smelly in a short time...
