Just bought some 2nd hand mavic crosstrails and there is about 6 to 8mm of lateral play in the freehub and shaft even with the cassette attached is this normal and will it go once the wheel is in the frame, I am running 9mm qr

I am almost certain that the crosstrail is the same as the crossmax, in as much as the hub body has an outboard bearing and an inboard ptfe bushing. This inboard bushing wears out over hundreds of miles and gives the play you are talking about.
Look on Ebay as they are normally on there , guy in America also does oversize ones iirc
It might get a teeny bit better if you wind up the QR to FT, but not by enough to solve the problem.
Good wheelset though , I run them strong nad reliable and second hand make a very sensible purchase

Just took another look at it and the circlip have popped off just refitted it and all is now working
