Looking at 19mm int. width economy wheel-sets.
Anyone got any pros or cons or better suggestions?
Cheers.
got some Cross rides for my ex lady after some careful research, and deciding she couldnt afford international standard general issue pro2 on 717s
based on:
within budget
cart bearings
cart, replaceable freehub body.
look secsy
i was more pleased with them that she was!
still buttery smooth a year on.
yay for cart bearings!
My mate had them for 2 years - were rimmed ones as he had V's. Wore thought the rims eventually but hubs still run well. He did find though 2 or 3 broken spokes and packets are quite expensive - cant seem to buy them singly. Also teh hubs are specific to the rims - so difficult to replace rims onto old hubs.
That said if not hammering them good value for money esp is disc specific!
I wouldn't go near the Crossrides with a barge pole.
Mate of mine has a set & bent them slightly after a couple of months - no problem to get them trued though. Not long after he noticed that one of the spokes was missing completely from the wheel & he doesn't know when or how it happened.
Now he is having real trouble getting replacement spokes for them. They are the flat bladed spokes and no one seems to stock them. Shops can get hold of them in packs, but seem unwilling to charge him anything less than the price of a whole pack - £25 for one side of a wheel!
I was looking at cheap wheelsets recently so I could stick some slicks on them to use on the road. I looked at the Fulcrums (I think it was the 5) and the DT Swiss XC (Two's I think). They are getting on for £200 though & by the time you've factored in a cassette/rim tape, tyres you are looking at a fair bit more.
In the end I rang my LBS and they had a set of wheels in stock that I assume they'd taken off a bike that they sold me for £80. I thought they looked familiar & when i got them home I realised that they were the same as on my girlfriends Spesh Myka Sport (£550 bike). They are Specialized Stout hubs & Alex rims. Seem OK to me and will be fine for a spot of road stuff. Might be worth ringing around.
My mates got a spare pack with most of them in it (think 2 missing) he is not using Stumpy01. Prob if you give him something for thetm he would let you have them or even sell you the old wheels - Rims worn out though? Now he is having real trouble getting replacement spokes for them. BTW I think they are not up to trashing and big stuff. If they are used for trails and XC light to medium I think they are OK?
Other half has crossrides on both his bikes, not had any problems at all. The one's on the full suss are over a year old, still true, no spoke breakages (he's about 15 stone).
foxyrider....do you know if they are front or rear? When we were trying to find some spokes for my mate, I rang my LBS & they wanted to know year of the wheel & whether it was front or rear that needed replacing. Apparently, they use different spokes front to rear (seems a bit weird) and he had to know the year as the design had changed. I wonder if the front/rear thing is just to do with the quantity in the pack, though? His are 2008 wheels.
I will send him a link to this thread & will let you know if he's interested. Thanks for the thought...
I've got Mavic Crossrides on one of my bikes. Look great and are smooooth as.

FOXYRIDER.......
I've mentioned it to him & he's interested in getting his hands on some of those spokes.
Do you know what yr they are from. I am assuming the disc/rim brake spokes will be identical!?
Can you find out what year they are & let me know how much he wants for them (say for 5 spokes) and we can take it from there.
I think my e-mail address is in my profile if you wanna mail me about it....
Oh yeah, and you're probably right about them being best suited to general trails/XC use.
stumpy YGM
I think they are identical spoke typres as they both have disc hubs just his have braking rims - I can measure them - I presume they are for the rear as I think its hose that went - I think you get a pack with long and shorts but I cant remember as I replaced them a little while ago - I'll ask him tonight and let you know.
I know he has them - they are about 2 years old I think? I'll check - you can prob have a;; the spokes unless he want to keep a few for spares......
Right asked my mate and seen the bag of spokes - its an 07 model wheelset - front an rear spoke length is the same as teh hub diameters are the same. I would have to measure teh length to say they are exatly the same but they are the flat, mavic cross ride spokes. He has about a pack of 10 and doesn't really want much so if your still interested then yours for £5 + postage - also he says his old wheelset is not use to him - the spokes are all fine and the hubs are still silky smooth so if your mate wants them for spares he could have the lot for £30 + postage. The only reason he got new ones is that one of the rims split as it wore through - they are still true and running smooth!
The code on the wheels are:
S. 6000
559 x 19
A mate of mine had some Crossrides and one of the spoke slots on the front hub sheared irrepairably over a bump.
Another mate had the same thing happen on rear hub of the road version of the wheels.
They look nice but I wouldn't go near them.
