A strange symptom has developed on my Mavic Crossride freehub. If you turn the bike over and crank the rear wheel up to a healthy speed the freehub isn't free enough to not pull the cranks round slowly. You can barely notice when riding but sometimes when you get up to speed and stop pedalling it makes a god-awful whine and creates a lot of vibration from the back wheel.
I took the cassette and freehub body off and the pawls looks intact and all the bearings are tight and free spinning, the freehub body itself just seems a bit too snug when fitting it back onto the hub. In short I have no idea what's wrong with it as everything seems in good condition with no play or obvious wear. I lubed it with some chain lube to see if thinner lubrication might free it up but it still pulled the cranks round but without the vibration and whining noise.
After conversing with the chap in the States who makes replacement bushings for Crossrides I took it all apart again and spun the freehub up in the lather at work and using a light scotch-brite grade lightly cleaned up the bushing. The fit was less snug this time but riding still makes it do the whine and vibration generation. The washer that sits between the hub and freehub bearings is intact and in good condition.
I don't believe the wheels have done massive miles but am clueless as to why it's behaving so badly.
Any ideas?
Symptoms sound like a worn nylon bushing, which is a common Mavic hub problem. Get one of the replacements from the US EBay bloke.
